Broken window unit air conditioner
Friedrich SV10A10, probably 6-7 years old. Fan stopped working. Finally wrestled the housing off, and no obstruction or anything--motor burnt out? Not sure.
Anything to do before bringing it somewhere tomorrow (as temps go back into the 90's)?
[//quote]

I'll beging by saying that I've only tried to fix an AC unit once, and failed miserably.
Have you checked the power leads running to the fan to ensure the fan is getting power?
I'd start there.Going where the wind don't blow so strange

Thanks, NF. Will check.
Already checked the leads after I saw the fan moved easily--no problems, but something could be shorted going into the motor. Can't really get into there, yet. I feel failure is imminent, but we'll see what the night brings...
[//quote]

Wish I could be more helpful. 7 YO AC is Toast? Close windows during the day. Open after sundown and insert 20" fan. Soak bed sheets in cold water, wring out, and sleep in relative comfort.

Or you can just build your own:

Fan motors are the limiting life factor on many ac window shakers. You can replace it but the process can be PITA. If you need ac now might be better off buy one now and fixing broken one later.
You are the mission Bob.

Yeah, thanks, was told the same by an AC tech yesterday. He first thought the fan might've seized due to moisture or dirt or something, but when I told him it was spinning freely he said that between the cost buying a new motor and replacing it we'd probably do better buying a new unit.

A/C units are so cheap these days... I just gave away 3. We got a mini-split system in our house. Win.
Gravity. It's the law.
