    TGR Photobook

From JCE's idea in the potd.

I think this is a good idea.

How do we select photos? Voting?

    discuss...

How about July 31st as a deadline. Each photog can submit up to 5 of their best/favorite photos. I'll set up voting on google docs - best photo from each photog makes it to a final vote. We could do voting in different categories ie. Action, Landscape, etc.

sounds good, you want to start the submissions thread?

There are a couple of places I have used to make books in the past that are cheap and have good results.

I was just about to start a topic about this... What is a good site? I need to have a book made by the end of the summer.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack this topic, it sounds like a pretty cool idea.

^^^ Yep, I was going to recommend Blurb as well. I did a coffee table book for my wife from our honeymoon, and it came out really well. No issues, and the quality is excellent. IIRC, it was around $75-80 for a 70+ page book.

And it is significantly less if you have less pages. But yeah, killer quality.

I'd be interested in participating in and purchasing a final copy. Fantastic idea.

good part about this is there is no minimum order. We could make the book and order 2 or 20.

I'm going to assume submissions will only be skiing related? If not the Photo of th Day thread is packed with good stuff.

    I would hope not.

I think people are submitting their favorites, regardless of whether or not they are potd photos as well.

I'd like to hope there would be a good chunk of skiing/mountain shots though...

I'd be in to contribute if I'm worthy.

Any ideas on how we could sell it and put the proceeds towards a worthy cause?

I'd definitely throw some shots up, too. Probably can't hang with a lot of the stuff some of you are shooting, but it's worth a shot. I'd be in to buy one, too, especially if proceeds are going to something worthwhile.

Sounds really cool. Being tgr related, there has to be actions shots, but sections for landscape, nature, abstract, night, portrait or whatever would be cool, too. Maybe several categories can be decided upon, winners get bigger photos than second through whatever places.

I'll buy one. Anyone who gets a shot in there can say they've been published.

I don't think it should be exclusively ski or action shots. This place has a boat load of them, and the book should definitely have them, but there's so much quality in here that's not skiing.
I think it should have a chapter on MPC winners for sure.
I also think we should consider a couple/few of our big guns getting more than one shot.
I'm in for a book, but I honestly don't think anyone not related to this joint will buy one. I think this should stay fun and pure and if it blows up on us then we can make it a fund raiser.

Someone who rarely posts in Photo / Video talk I would be interested in buying one. OTOH I make charity donations - to my choice of charities - whenever I can. I would like to buy your photo book, if the price was right, increasing the price at all might put me off, even though the profits go to a good cause.

Looking forward to seeing the results!

All of the suggestions sound good. Here's how I see it in a first draft - please feel free to just quote and edit this if you think that something should be changed.

There will be a standardized way to include a title, the photographer, their website, a rider name, and location.

The categories are: (help me out on this one)

    Snow (action)
    Snow (landscape)
    Sport/Action
    Nature/Wildlife
    Portraits
    Abstract/Artsy
    MPC Winners

Voting could be held through Google Docs Forms (thought I am open to any other suggestions.)

It will be suggested that you make a $__ donation to _______ for each photobook purchased.
    Edit away.

Crazy, I had this exact idea about 3 weeks ago. I would love to see some of the high rated trip reports in it as well. I'd buy a copy. May need a mag with some design talent to spearhead this and collect photos. Or can we collaborate with the blurb.com software?

I made a magazine about 2 weeks back like this of just mine and friends photos. Turned out really nice, 26 pages front and back on 8.5x11 and copies are around $15.

I support this idea. Some fantastic photographers up in here. Shall we include forum alias as well as real name for submissions (as it is a TGR book)?

With all the great photos on the site you shouldn't have any problems finding photos. It's just a matter of picking them, deciding on book format, quality, size, pages and price. At some point you will want to take a survey to see how much people want to spend.

I'd add travel and panorama to the list of categories.
