    CHEAP, easy, non-refrigerated meals....whatchu got?

I've got a few trips coming up in which i'm going to need to cut corners when possible (as usual). Specifically in the meal department (NOT beer dept.).

I've concocted some weird shit in my day out of necessity (saltines w/ Franks Red Hot and sprouts, ect.) but i'm looking for some new ideas on non-refrigerated meals on the cheap. Let's hear what you got....

Mountain House freeze dried meals @ REI are pretty damn good, and about $6.00/each. They're pretty big too, one should hold you over for most of the day.

Lasagna w/ meat sauce is numero uno.

Canned tuna, packets of mustard & mayo, hot sauce, crackers.
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

Chili-mac is probably tops for the calorie-cost ratio. Box of mac and cheese for $1.50, can of chili for $1 and you've probably got close to 1500 calories right there.

Need milk & butter for the Mac, no? Need to cook it, no? If you can cook you likely have a fridge... unless you're camping.

MREs if you can get them. Although I wouldn't recommend surviving on them for more than a day or two.

You don't need milk and butter for mac 'n cheese. Just water and heat.

Although the milk/butter make it better, hot sauce and a can of tuna or chili make it pretty good too.

Truth. Dairy isn't needed. Powdered milk works too. And canned chicken is better for mixing with other foods than tuna IMHO.

Will you want to eat without any heating/cooking or would you be able to add water and heat (aka- backpacking stove to heat a cup of water or the like?)

If you can heat some water- Ramen noodles, some canned Chicken or Turkey mixed in and that can be a meal for sure. If no hot water then that would be hard and not taste as good. Also one freezer bag meals recipes or one pan wonders are out there for a bunch of different items.

Also there are tons of ideas if you have a food dehydrator- they are popular with the backpacking crowd, add water to rehydrate.
