    NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his "foremost" mission as the head of America's space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world. Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA's orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel.

    "When I became the NASA administrator -- or before I became the NASA administrator -- he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering," Bolden said in the interview.

    How long before the ultra-conservative/Christian camp denounces Arabic numerals in favor of Roman numerals? Or has it already happened?

    On topic, NASA is a pretty messed up organization anyway. They'll probably start reaching out to the Muslim community in 2020 or so.

    Yeah those contributions were pretty important during Europe's dark ages but lately, not so much. Doesn't seem like a priority to me.

    That's a weird comment to come from NASA, but only a neanderthal would try to argue the position that improving relationships with the people of predominantly Muslim nations is a bad thing.

    Some great comments on that article:

    Yes but doesn't it seem like we should have other departments/organizations dedicated to doing just that? I would have thought the priorities of a space administration would be, ummm, you know, space

    ^ all those things you listed are pretty much easy, everyday tasks. Going to mf'ing SPACE is monumental and thus would really suck to be blown up only just after your arrival.

    I would rather not be blown up, but if I am going to be blown up I'd much rather have it done after I have just arrived in space rather than one day while I'm taking a dump with out having seen space.

    who would you rather maintain our international relations vis a vis space travel, NASA (people who know the ins and outs of space) or the TSA (people *from* outer space)?!?!?!?
