    hyperterminal

Anyone have a serial number they'll loan me? The 30 day free trial lasted 10 minutes. Now I'm sitting in a pump station trying to program a radio without the program I need to do it. Fuck.

what's your connection over? serial? you know, the standard answer is 'just use linux', but i'm sure there are other programs you can use such as putty.

set your date in the past, reboot the machine and see if your HT won't start working again

Ditto this. I've had to use hyperterminal thousands of times on tons of different Windows computers. Hyperterminal is just a free terminal emulator program with Windows as far as I have always seen and been told. Maybe different versions or on different OS it isn't free? Just google terminal emulator and you should be able to download other free ones. I like hyperminal but a lot of people prefer one that I can't remember the name of.

No I can't believe it I checked both of them and Windows says they are not part of the package now. You can download an older version of Hyperterminal (5.0) at the link below. Says it's for XP but works on Vista and I'm sure Windows 7 as well. Microsoft is getting cheap.

Select "External Download Mirror 2." For some reason the first mirror doesn't work. Looks like it's a .rar file possibly. I just clicked it and it installed but might be because I have software to open .rar files. If you don't have software that opens .rar files it's easy to find. Just google "open .rar"

I tried the software and it seems to work fine. Still able to pick Com port or TCPIP, etc.

Thanks, I've now got putty, terminal & Cigwyn loaded. One of them should work.

For the record, Hyperterminal was not included in Vista or Win 7. There are a bunch of sites that talk about downloading it or getting it from a Win XP license. But as others report- depending on what you need there are many alternatives that are freeware or open source type of licenses:

Putty (I've used this for some time)
    Realterm
Teraterm (The one I am testing)
    Absolute Telnet

or the paid version of the Hyperterm Private Edition that the OP probably ran as trial software.

Or if you just need a Windows Remote Shell then WinRS or to troubleshoot a modem or fax you can use the Phone and Modem options in the Hardware section of the Control Panel.

This is yet another reason I can use to tell my IT department to fuck off when they try and get me to "upgrade" to Vista.

X3,4,5? I used to use Hyperterminal but have used PuTTY the past 8 or so years.

Unless your doing dial-up Modem stuff (And who does that)

    PuTTY is better anyway

And For File Transfer looking at log ect.

Get WINSCP (Fuck Unix) I got WinSCP

Teraterm is the one I was trying to think of. Not sure if it's free but anybody I've worked with in Telecom seems to either use hyperterminal or Teraterm. But whatever gets you connected will do.

Teraterm is Open Source from Japan, so no worries.

And yes WinSCP could be added to the list - especially if FTP transfer is also needed.
