Roy Clarke...I knew that the guy knew his way around a fretboard, but didn't know he could shred quite like that, and I guess his association with HeeHaw DID in fact taint my perception of breadth of his abilities....and very wrongly so.

But what I really wanted to thank you for was for that Jon Gomm video. That guy is amazing...wild talent on the strings combined with a very good voice. Never even heard of the guy before, so thanks for turning me on to a new talent.

Anybody know what that guitar Gomm is using? At first I thought it had the look of an Australian 'Maton', but I don't recognize the bridge shape. I like it, anyway. Looks and sounds sorta like a cedar top...but looking at where it's scratched up...white cedar instead of red cedar, which would be unusual. I love cedar tops! If it IS spruce, kudos to the builder, 'cause it has a very cedar-like sound.

Shit....I don't just love cedar tops....I love acoustic guitar in general. Their graceful simplicity....their individuality. Something about the shape - it just whispers: "play me."

EDIT: I've said it before, but in reference to that other video directly above, Michael Hedges was a true Master of Masters. The acoustic world was dealt a serious loss with his too early passing.

Another really great guitarist and sometime guitar-tapper is Kaki King...same last name. she played most of the actual acoustics for the movie August Rush...places where they needed to show hands actually playing...those were her hands.

In the movie August Rush she developed some tapping tunes very similar to your man Justin King....but here, in her song 'Gobi', she's gone back to mostly conventional, but still very good.

EDIT: Actually, having just gone back and listened to this vid (FOUR times!!!) with high fidelity headphones, I can say I used entirely the wrong word.......there is NOTHING conventional about Kaki King.

Okay, this guy plays with his toes, but since he was born without arms and his playing sounds pretty good for this rendition, I figure he deserves a look.

If I try REAL hard, I MIGHT be able to pick up a washcloth with my toes.

    Some Canadian content:

Don Ross, one of the greatest steel-string players you never heard of:

A classic Bruce Cockburn tune, with Ric Emmett (of hair-band Triumph fame) on resonator guitar:

"... Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to your body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards." – Edward Abbey

And then there is Leo Kottke:
