That would be North Carolina, perhaps you are thinking of our esteemed senator Strom Thurmond....
It's hilarious. There was a black guy running for governor on the democratic ticket and only won 3 or 4 out of the 60 precincts in my county (which were heavy black populations). Alvin Greene? Over half the precincts. I guess the name 'Vic Rawl' just doesn't work for people. How embarrassing is it for that guy?
here's some quality interviews:

I'm not kidding when I say, HE COULD WIN! He could become some kind of fucked up cult hero and win the election!

Or just become a black, liberal Joe the plumber.
My favorite quote?
Yeah, he's ready for the big league bullshitters.Like any good politician, Greene tried to deflect questions about the particulars of his campaign to talk of "the issues."
"I graduated from the University of South Carolina," he said. "We have more unemployment than any other time in South Carolina history. Hold on, I have another beep."

The SC Democratic Party and his opponent Vic Rawl failed miserably in getting out the news on who the real candidate was. Rawl never ran any commercial in this part of the state and didn't even bother with signs outside of the voting area. End result: Alvin M. Greene was above Vic Rawl in the section to vote and people picked either the top person or the one that sounded more legit? People are still trying to figure out how he won by 20 points.
There is some theory that it was a GOP plant, but it's highly doubtful. Considering the GOP governor race was pretty close that people wanted their votes to count.
What makes the story even better is the fact he has been charged with a felony and instead of using the $10,000 he used to be put on the ballot for a real attorney he is fighting the charges with a public defender.
Demint would have to die in a plane crash, get caught in an affair, come out of the closet, or something major drastic to not win. This is the same state that McCain won handily last election despite the pretty decent black population.
try this out for a fun little game, go check out any county in SC and see how Robert Ford, the black candidate, did running as governor. Then go back to the same county and see how Greene did running for Senate. It's ridiculous.
This is Pickens county: in one of the most conservative parts of the state, Repubs outnumbers dems 15:1 in the ballots. This is how the governor race ended up:

Ford didnt win a single area.
Senate:

Greene won the majority of the county.
It's like that in every county. Hell, even in Columbia where politics are a big deal. Ford didn't win a single area.

Greene won the county.

You didn't hear? its now oil slicks that seperate us.
By the way, I think whomever is guiding this guy is doing a terrible job. He fully should have said that he has done nothing in campaigning but that he knew that people were so pissed with the "establishment" that they would elect a 13 yr vet over his opponent. He should play it up that the system is so screwed that he might just beat the corrupt current holder of the seat. He should be playing up that everyone is attacking his filing fee as a way to keep their jobs and because they feel threatened. He should attack the amount of the filing fee like a poll tax. He should be going at this thing full force. He should say he knows nothing about his opponent. That he has no experience in politics but that he knows something is wrong with the current system and that he's there to shed light on the process.
As long as he keeps trying to make the case that he's legit, he will fail miserably.Goals for the season: -Try and pick up a sponsor.--Phill

There is something funny about the current political powers that be calling for an investigation into a man simply because he is about as eloquent as driftwood. Since when do you need more than three brain cells to garner any success in politics? What do the incumbents rely on to support claims of malfeasance besides the fact that a politician appears to be Eli Porteresque?

Think back to when Dubya first opened his mouth (and, of course, the rest of the times he talked during his two terms). Suddenly, this guy don't look all that dumb.
