In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

My original 3g desperately needs an upgrade. Two years I've had it.

I haven't done a battery replacement, I have seen TR's online about how to do it.
You have to pull the phone apart, obviously, and you have to remove the screen and the touch sensor. These break really easily and are a bit expensive to replace.
Additionally, many of the online advertised batteries are not the same as the specs for the battery that comes with the phone. I'm no apple fanboy, but I've heard its common that the phone's have been fried by batteries that have been purchased online.
So in summary, you can replace the battery, but there is a good chance you may break something along the way. If you take it to apple, the will replace your phone with a refurb, they will not replace the battery. You will get the latest firmware and baseband which will remove you ability to JB.
The best bet is to take it to an Apple authorized dealer that is not an Apple store. There are also stores that are not Apple stores, that are authorized to to battery replacements.
Check Hofo, modmyi, iclarified and a few others for reference to the troubles I've posted here.
If you do decide to tackle it, post a TR. I'd love to see a better example of someone succeeding at this, because, despite all of the things I've read, I need to replace my battery soon~ish and am tempted to try it myself.Last edited by iscariot; 06-07-2010 at 04:03 PM.

This is a pretty good example of a walk through.
Actually I guess it isn't that bad if you watch a professional doing it. Most of the vids I've seen are done by 14 year-olds that inevitably break their phones.

Can't you take it in to Apple? Pretty sure they'll replace the battery (ie. give you a brand new looking refurb) for like $70ish.
