Piranha 3-D
could be a total trainwreck, but could also be a cheezy rollercoaster ride given the cast (Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Richard Dreyfuss, Elizabeth Shue...)

My only complaint is that the director is making a name for himself by continually remaking borderline horror films from the '70s and '80s rather than doing anything truly original (that said, i wasn't the biggest fan of his breakthrough film Haute Tension, but it at least showed promise and was original)."Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

Quite an eclectic cast for sure, and I imagine it will have a Snakes on a Plane feel to it but much better. Hopefully the 3-D on this is the tits.
As for High Tension, I'm in the same camp ... thought the ending was a huge reach. Definitely 2nd tier when compared to the likes of Frontiers, À l’intérieur, Martyrs, and Calvaire.Last edited by NPG; 05-10-2010 at 02:59 PM.

HT started out great, had incredible cinematography (the French have that over-exposed technicolor sepia look on lock down), but the ending was a total cop-out. Have been bummed that Aja jumped Stateside and has been making a living doing mediocre remakes of mediocre films rather than truly improving his craft (i.e. despite the craptacular ending of HT, the film showed promise in terms of direction, pacing, and cinematography).
I wasn't impressed with Frontier(s) and Calvaire, while kind of creepy, just seemed to rehash the old redneck/country bumpkin schtick of Deliverance.
Haven't heard of/seen A L'interieur, but may look it up.
At any rate, spot on with the SoaP comparison...and I certainly hope they go for shock and awe 3-D like they did with The Final Destination. That gimmicky inyerface stuff actually made that film a hoot."Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

^Duh! (moi Francais est muy rusty).
i've seen the trailers for inside...looks kinda nasty.
another French one that i've heard mixed things about is Martyrs (at least I think it's French).
and we're not really hijacking the thread since we're discussing Aja, his homeland, and other French films of the horror genre...it's like a tributary hijack of sorts.
but back on Piranha, didn't they already do it in 3-D back in the day? There was Piranha, Piranha 2 (directed by James Cameron), and I thought there was a 3rd, kinda like how they did Jaws 3-D.
Speaking of Jaws, wonder if Dreyfuss' character will be a tribute to Robert Shaw's Quint...he looked kinda like a crusty seafarer in the trailer."Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

went and caught Clash of the Titans in 3-D today and they showed the Piranha 3-D trailer in glorious Read D.
WHOA! it's gonna be cheesy, but it's gonna be cool as they go for the inyerface gimmicky 3-D that i totally dig.
they also showed the 3-D trailer for Step Up 3-D and even that flick looks cool (they gimmicky stuff they throw at you is bugged out)."Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

Saw this on Friday and if you hate having tits shoved in your face, killer fish, and TONS of hot chicks being eaten alive by killer fish, then you will probably hate this film. As my brother put it, it's probably no more entertaining than watching 3 Seinfeld or Office episodes in a row. Over the quick ninety minutes (apparently the DVD will feature 20 minutes of additional footage), Piranha doesn't drag at all while keeping your attention the entire time. The effects are decent for what you would expect and the casting was surprisingly good with Jerry O'Connell stealing most of his scenes. Ultimately, I think this movie will be best known for having THE BEST quasi-lesbian underwater sequence in the history of mainstream cinema. Save the 4 bucks and see this in 2-D.

Totally enjoyable and super fast-paced B-movie action. The camp factor was in full effect and it appeared that all involved were having a hoot.
Jerry O'Connell truly is a Hollywood National Treasure and abso-f@#kin'-lutely kills in the movie.
It was nice to see Dina Meyer, too.
The 3-D started out with a bang and then kinda fizzled toward the middle (they really needed to show more T&A in reach-out-and-smack-you-in-the-face Jug-O-Vision, that's for sure, especially with the hard R rating. Besides, if you're gonna use the technology and bill your movie with the 3-D tagline, then you might as well exploit that technology, too).
Despite the cheese factor, I found myself startled and knocked out of my seat on more than one occasion.
The L-Word sequence mentioned by NPG came totally outta leftfield and was pretty much nuts (although it is an example of a sequence that could have been additionally amped up with a lot more 3-D action).
Still, it exceeded (okay, perhaps met) my expectations in full.
Oh yeah, they showed the trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife in 3-D and that movie looks completely over-the-top.
They showed a new trailer for Tron: Legacy, too. But I gotta say that the new trailer makes the film look kind of hokey and weak (the first teaser trailer from last year was much, much better)."Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."
