    Time ATAC Z

Does anyone have any experience with Time ATAC Z pedals? I have a cross check that i want to use for townie duty as well as on some longer tours. Would ATAC Z's work well for this? It would be nice to have some clipless action for the long haul as well as the ability to just use regular sneakers when i am hitting the grocery store. Any thoughts? Would the pedal be jabbing me in the middle of the foot when i am not locked in?

I've had a pair for a couple of years now, and while they're stout and trouble free, they aren't really great with softer soled shoes. Those retention bars will just dig into your foot as you guessed.

I'm no Crank Bros. fan, but their Mallet model (and possibly the more slippery looking Acids) looks to be the best thing going for what you want.

Exactly what north20 said: i've run them for 2-3 years now, and while they're a great pedal with bike shoes, they will dig into your feet when wearing sneakers. You could get away with it for a quick ride to the store, but not comfortable, especially over the long haul. From experience, I think you're going to find this with any platform SPD, at least to some degree. Good luck!

I have just moved over to Speedplay pedals- any of their X serie style and then think about their option for their STREET SHOE PLATFORMS that are available to mount to the pedals.

I have not personally seen the platforms but the web site make them look like they will have plenty of distribution of pressure from standard street shoes like sneakers or whatever.

used to rock some crank bros mallets and recall forgetting my riding shoes one day. did a 3 hour ride on some technical trails in just my sneakers without too much trouble. the times aren't too different in terms of the platform, so i'd imagine you would be able to do the same.

Money pedals, rocked for the past few seasons on mostly cross country rides, plenty of long ones too. They work great and work just fine for all of my in town rides. I can bang out 8 miles RT down to the bars&back and not even notice.

Thanks for all the advice - one more quick question. I recently came across these.

Anyone have any experience? I am thinking this might work better for my purposes. It looks like they make two flavors; the regular kind and the "gripper" version. Is the gripper version worth the extra $$??

I would like to stick with Time (if at all possible) as i have regular ATACs on all my mountain bikes and LOVE them. That and i could do without buying another pair of shoes/cleats...

Only thing about those is like most of the pedals claiming to do this- when going into the clips- you only have 1 side (unlike the Shimano spd and similar that are set up to clip in on either side.) Not as bad on road biking as you tend to clip out fewer times, but mountain biking I liked not having to play around getting clipped in the same way the Look road pedals and many worked- having to rotate them cleat/clip side up.

Yeah - i thought about that but as this is just a commuter/tourer/cx bike i dont think that will be a huge problem. I went ahead and ordered them... will let everyone know my impressions when i put some miles on. There wasn't too much on the net about them but i am assuming since they are Time that they will not suck too badly...

they look promising for your purpose - hope the platform is large enough though. i had some one-sided SPD / cage pedals on one of my steel hardtails. occasionally that bike got used on singletrack and it quickly became second-nature to flip-and-roll the pedal to get in.
