ankle update: 6 month/final ortho visit

Had my final visit with my ortho today. Denver mags needing an ortho would serve themselves well by considering Dr. Tom McDonouogh of Orthopedic Surgery Associates. I've been to many ortho's, and Dr. McDonough is the best I've seen. He not only knows his stuff, but he's also good at listening and sharing info.

Anyhow... this is what my ankle looked like 6 months ago today:

This is what it looked like today:

Prognosis is good. He was very happy with my mobility and strength. However, no skiing/boarding until Feb 1. No impact of any kind until then. No jumping off of stuff any time after then. He strongly recommends that I quit running... permanently.
Biking, walking, elliptical machines, etc. will have to do for me from now on. The bone is healed but is also much more susceptible to impact breaks. That will never change. Doc said he was very happy that we got this far and that I'm lucky not to be crippled.

For those old guys like me who are boarding... GET SOME STIFF BOOTS. Even though my accident happened in the park, it could have happened anywhere on the mountain. It was just one of those freak things and just staying out of the park isn't enough. I strongly believe that if I'd been in stiff boots I would've walked away from this unscathed. As it stands now, I'll likely have a lifetime of arthritic pain in my ankle after going through nearly a year of rehab. Apparently I'm going to be weather-affected too. I could barely walk saturday and sunday before the snow came. today, I was fine. If nothing else, I'll be a good predicter for the upcoming storms.

One last time... GET STIFF BOOTS.
