    7D Bike Clips

I wish I could say these were mine. Definitely worth sharing with the collective nonetheless:

Just looks flat. Other than the rad depth of field stuff, it looks like footage from my consumer camcorder for the most part. I've just seen better come out of those canon DSLRs. I know it's overcast because there's no splotchy sunlight but the second clip in particular has nothing that pops to me. Speaking of pixel averaging, are those things doing 4:2:0 ?

I guess they owe you an apology for not wearing a red t-shirt

kidding, it is a tad... dull maybe, that's why I was asking about the saturation, I do still think that the depth and shooting itself was cool

Exactly. I've got my boys trained properly to show up in some damn colors!

I need to play with one these before I buy one. I really have no idea what kind of in camera control you have over things like color saturation.....maybe none. But you damn sure shouldn't be showing up to shoot in overcast woods wearing black and white!

But it's clips like this that make me think there's no reason for me drop the coin on one of these cameras. There are others of course that make me think the exact opposite.....

Seems like some of the saturation stuff could be PP preference as well. I was still fairly impressed with the first vid. Had the Collective feel to it. Really like the dynamic filming. I know that's nothing new, but it's nice to see an effort made to have the camera moving during the shot. Woo, I've seen you do that on some of your clips as well. Speaking of which, where's a 2010 addition?

The DOF and focus are good, the vid quality could use some saturation/bump up in terms of colour (but like you said, it could be the videographer's preference). Riders should be wearing brighter colours when shooting on grey bird days like that. I think it had the collective/coastal crew feel to it with the dynamic/moving camera shots; that is good although I'm starting to wonder if there are different angles to shoot from as this technique has become the norm and may get played out quickly. The actual riding itself was meh IMHO. Slo-mo makes even average riding look cool.

    Bottom line...I still want a 7D.

Funny. I was thinking if there was a 7D in your hands, it would result in a better production than what we are seeing here. The Riders being equal, much of the shot quality is standing behind the camera...IMHO.

Wait a second, on that first vid, at the beginning. Coolest shot is the two riders looking into the sunset.

But, I read the manual for those DSLRs that you're not supposed to use video mode while pointing the lens straight into the sun??

Is that really bad for the camera, or what? Does anyone know?

    No offense meant.

    I definitely look cooler in slow-mo...very slow-mo...

I appreciate the sentiment. I'll come clean and just say what I meant. I'm looking at a lot of those shots and just thinking I could have gotten a much more interesting image out of my HPX170 without doing the physical shooting any differently. There's just so much control over the image in a dedicated video camera that in a lot (ok, most) of situations, it's just a better tool.

Most of this is just me battling out in my head whether or not I should get a 7D/550D whatever with video in mind. I want an slr just because I haven't had one in years and the ability to do some sickly time lapses is a big draw. But I can say for a fact that if I came home after a day of shooting with a 7D over my HPX, and it looked like this, I'd be upset over my choice.

But you're right. A lot of it is who's using the toy. Some of PROVO's 5D stuff makes me want to stand up and cheer.

Sensor burn is sort of a boogeyman but I have never had an issue. Perhaps if you were using a telephoto to take video of a midday eclipse or something you could have an issue. Sunsets and other stuff with the sun low in the sky have so much atmospheric filtering you aren't going to do any damage to your sensor. IMHO, YMMV, etc etc.

The lens can act as a magnifying glass which could burn the imager when exposed to direct sunlight for too long.

Can I use a canon prime to start fires with if I ever get stuck out in the woods? That alone is worth somethin'!

one of the reasons I am moving to primes only.

I know the Sigma 30mm 1.4 can start a fire just as good as something like a 35L so you are better off buying the Siggy and putting the extra coin towards some matches and cotton balls swabbed in Vaseline for those cloudy days.

kidwoo...you can adjust saturation, contrast, sharpness, color tone in camera. You can do this all under different "pre-set" curves. You can also with the attached software make your own curves and adjust pretty much everything. It may not have quite as much in camera control as an HPX, but out of camera with the software it has more.

Those videos look like how a lot of people are recommending to shoot with the 7D (with a superflat or neutral setting with contrast and sharpness all the way down)...like its RED. Shoot it flat and then do everything in post this way you get more dynamic range. People forget that this is a 4:2:0 cam. You can't color correct like crazy. I shoot everything as close to the look I want in camera. A lot of people will argue against that. I think they are idiots.

Well there ya go.... That's good to hear. It's the kind of thing I'd usually know but these cameras have brought such a bunch of morons to video forums, I lose patience reading up on them.

Me too. In camera looks are so much easier than degrading the fuck out of your original files with too much CC. And up until you said that, I didn't even know if these were shooting 4:2:0 or not......which the fact that it is makes it even dumber.

I don't expect HPX kind of control because that's just nuts. But I do feel better knowing you don't have to expect footage like what's in these bike vids.

    Thanks for chiming in.
