I raced for a little bit in high school, found that constant emphasis on technique and the amount of training (vs just skiing around) really helped my skiing elsewhere on the mountain. Then again our coaches would have us go take a mogul run after spending 2 hours on gates, just to see what would happen.
One of our coaches had a great quote:
"All great racers are great skiers, not all great skiers are great racers"
that doesn't mean that having lots of FIS points means you can go out and smoke Seth on some crazy AK line, but it does mean that you have solid technique that WILL help you handle whatever terrain you are on.

Race training improves technique, tactics win a race. Like a good beat-down. Get next to a WC guy on a dual course. Assholes and Elbows is all your going to see. 0.20 is the closest I ever got, weak.

Do you guys remember when Tanner Hall won the Hahnenkammen? Rhalves and Bode were really pissed off.
BTW...rippers w/ racing backgrounds include: Shane, Seth, the Crists, Nobis, Olsson, Wendy Fisher, Plake, Lynsey Dyer, Charolette Moats...and a whole bunch more. Good racing technique and atheleticism crosses over.Quando paramucho mi amore de felice carathon.

^ No argument here.
I don't think anyone is arguing that a strong racing background does not lend itself incredibly well to become an amazing big mountain/park/whatever skier.
I am arguing that the transition is not automatic. Just because you are an incredible racer does not mean you will be an incredible skier outside of the course. Will it help? Hell yea. Does it guarantee it? Hell no.
I do not consider WC racers to be the epitome of ski talent/style. In my eyes, skiing is an art, not a science.Flying the Bluehouse colors in Western Canada! Let me know if you want some rad skis!!
"He is god of snow; the one called Ullr. Son of Sif, step son of Thor. He is so fierce a bowman and ski-runner that none may contend! He is quite beautiful to look upon and has all the characteristics of a warrior. It is wise to invoke the name of Ullr in duels!"

I think a world-cup racer is going to figure out pow/crud in a hurry, and do it at a very high- maybe even world class- level.
I think a high level freeskier without a race background might take a long time to figure out racing, and might never become 'world class.'

I'm guessing that most TGR funny goes right over your head.
Anyway, I'm not saying that Tanner is dead, but if he isn't dead why won't he post in this thread and deny these rumours once and for all? What is he hiding? As it stands now all signs point to him being dead. His continued silence speaks volumes.

Doesn't everyone know that for all the time racers spend on skis that they never, ever freeski, ski powder, etc. Also, they never ever had skied anything other than race courses prior to being a racer.

I remember about ten years ago reading an analysis of the (prior to then) relatively poor results of U.S. ski racers on the world cup circuit. It was a pretty well-researched paper, and one of the critiques was that young U.S. racers (read 'kids') spent too much time in gates compared (so the article claimed) to their european counterparts. It said the U.S. kids were not learning front to back weight control/balance and were always in the 'back seat.' It recommended more freesking.
