My grandmother rips it on these. Mike Douglas gave her a pair after she darned his socks and made him a delicious sandwich. Now all the gapers think she's super-extremo, even though she's only a PSIA level XIV who can't angulate due to osteoporosis.

    Salomon Pocket Rockets

Unchanged for 3 straight years, the Pocket Rocket (or PR) is one of the first "backcountry twin tips" and still one of the most popular.

Pocket Rockets are the descendant of the old Salomon Super Mountain, and thus are very soft skis. This makes them quite a bit of fun in soft fluff, but they are deflected easily in harder snow.

Pocket Rockets have been known to ski approximately 3-5cm shorter than their actual length due to the full raised tail. This makes them feel "squirly" to skiers used to a longer ride. They also tend to require better fore/aft balance than a longer ski.

The Pocket Rockets have a rather short turning radius. In combination with their soft flex and twin tip, this makes them suprisingly agile bump skis for such a wide ski.

The PRs lack of stability and sidecut makes them not well suited to extreme velocity.

The Pocket Rockets are also not well known for their durability. They are foam cored skis, and do not ship with much camber even when new. There are stories of larger or agressive skiers skiing all of the camber out of PRs in a season or two.

Finally, their light weight have made the Pocket Rocket a popular touring ski as well as a popular jibbing ski (low swing weight.)

    The good:
    -Very agile and quick turning
-Awesome in tight spots and tree runs
-Holds a good edge in soft snow, carves well
-Doesn't tend to cut uphill on you
-They are fat, thus good in powder
-They crank in the moguls for a fat ski
    -They are light
    -They jump well
    -Solid Powder/crud capabilities
    -I have a pair

    The Bad:
-Soft in the ends so they are not a straightline speed machine
-From what I hear the don't have a twinkie-like shelf life
-Known to break just in front of the binding
-You might get called a gaper for skiing on them

If you are not heavy, ski in cruddy conditions often, occasional powder days, trees, and have to navigate soft moguls these are a good option.

If you are a speed freak, or need a 3 season ski probably not a great option.

Oh, and they have a cool robot graphic on them.

You found the PR to be good in crud?!? I found it to be a horrible crud ski. Just not even in the same league as 10.EXs, G4s, Explosivs or anything with any stiffness at all.

    Odd.

I should qualify that with: it depends on the consistency of the crud. Medium to soft chopped up powder I think they do well. Heavy crud or icy crud - not so good.

    Exclamation

Just to underscore the "not so durable" point, I nearly ripped the edge out of my PRs yesterday. As is, the cap is starting to pull away from the edge. My shop guy doesn't know any permanent fixes, so they have just graduated to "rock ski" (in two seasons...)

    Thumbs up

I love my PRs, but I'm a skinny kid who likes soft skis. They are amazing for landing big drops and kick ass pretty much all over the hill. They spin easily too. I've also never had any probs straightlining on these skis or carrying a ton speed through crud. I know heavier people used to stiffer skis dislike them, but as a skinny kid that likes to take air and ski fast I've been nothing but pleased with them.

I just got my second pair.

but then again, 10.EX, G4's and Explosivs are pretty much in a league of their own when it comes to crud busting.
