I had no idea that Berthoud used to be a ski area. Cool bit of history.
How does the FOB Avy class stack up against the one that they do at Eldora? Now that I live in CO, I feel like I absolutely need to take a quality Avy I class before I head out with my buddies who are into backcountry.

In the discussion at 14ers.com linked below, Hacksaw does a great job of describing the difference between the FOBP course and a Level I class. Chose your courses wisely, but take as many as you can.

sweet, thanks for the info. I will look into one of the early FOB classes I think, then try and take an actual Avy 1 course over xmas break since my school schedule doesn't allow any time off until then.
Luckily the guys that I will be starting out with seem experienced and VERY conservative about what they ski.

this thread is going to explode after the next storm rolling through... be safe out there! layers are scary, had a column fail while isolating the back side of it on sherman 10-25. mix of depth hoar, wind slab and surface hoar failed on all three

Gotta agree with you. I'm ready to get away from skiing above treeline, especially with the new snow coming. Today up really high I was able to punch through the snow with my fist. I was on a few inches of pencil hard slab. Underneath that I could stuff my entire arm into the pack, completely unconsolidated. I skied a different way of course. Originally Posted by FutureHermit

The snow is coming into Denver very wet. I can only imagine how upside down the pack will be up there. I think on a good note this will paste anything that isn't faceted already. It should be interesting to see how it develops.
Be careful. I'm not gonna get out till the 2nd. I've got family stuff to do. Regulars, hit me up for Monday turns and exploration.

Runs skied: Powder Line, Bonanza (East Side Runs)
Snow Depth at top: 65cm
Make sure you take your really fat skis. Snow was deep and I sunk with my 99 underfoot. Deep and (semi) light, and when I did get going it was awesome! Snowing when I got there and didn't stop.
