Had several turns similar to the pic above which really made my day. But I also had several that I hit bottom and was skiing on the gravel. We also had a collapse of the weak layer. It did not propagate and was only a pocket. I can imagine more of this to come though.

Overall, I had some of the deepest early season turns I have ever had and am more than happy with October 29th.
Hey, man. This is Richard from yesterday, in the Xterra. Thanks again for letting me tag along. We'll have to make some more turns this year for sure.

I'll try to catch the CAIC bash on the 14th, too.

Somebody already posted the most recent trail map, but I figured some of you might be interested in the trail map from '98-'99. Enjoy!

This morning was COLD, and still snowing...NICE snow up top, though...and deep, I didn't hit anything (on the East Side).

Nice to see Skiberly, TrainWreck, and SheRa. Also good to see Blurred cruising the parking lot in his pickup...super gnar, way to get some B!

Amazing conditions. I did one silly run down the lift line, but then got two SWEET runs down hha woods (Hightrail Trees). Repeated faceshots in those steeps. Only gripes were that my skin track (that Ian started - thanks) got wrecked by booters and I came down too low the last lap and had to pull myself up the steep hillside to the highway in deep snow. That made me pretty tired. No problem hitching which kinda surprised me. So fun. Really like winter.

"Macgyver " Joe ended up using a probe, carabiner, and a little string to get the door open.kinda glad he locked himself out, because we did another lap and he was waiting at the bottom of HHA for the shuttle!Last time he locked himself out was in BFE outside of Aspen. That resulted in a busted back window.thanks to all that helped him!All around a good early season day at the pass.

    Today was awesome

Wow, what a great day up at the Pass... way better coverage than I expected, still early season to be sure, rock skis are a necessity, but still solid knee-deep pow in the trees without hitting much. I was feeling lazy with how good the pow was so I just lapped the powerline and adjacent trees towards the gully, so good, basically every run was fresh tracks. Rides were a little tough in the morning, but got better later in the day, to where I was able to get 10 or 12 runs in a few hours which is always nice. I was on Seth's with green pack/avalung for those I might have seen? Fun times.
    best,
    Phil.

Went up this morning for a few laps at the Berthoud internation raceway Junkshow, complete with girls on innertubes getting worked on the West face, kids on rental gear, and a assortment of folks booting the skin track and skiing the boot track. Still Fun to get back out though. Made a few laps on each side. There has been so much traffic on the west side I think a lot of it will stick as a decent base, even though it was warming up substantially by noon. Trees had a lot in them, but still too scary for my taste. Tib/Fibs lurking around every corner. Fun times, it feels like winter.

I found 10' of snow in a lee area behind Flora today. Southeast aspect at ~12,500. Wow, on Halloween in Colorado! The loading was all within 100 vert of the ridgeline.

Of interest is there was zero faceting at the ground, two 1" thick ice layers 1.5' and 3' above the ground which did have facets. Several micro weak layers hidden in the 7' of new which was consistently one finger hardness. Settling whomfs all day long on W to N to E.

The girl that ate it head first on the tube made my day there. Snow was getting heavy by around noon...did one run on the TST/the plunge on the west side to see how the snow was, definitely need the rocks skis. The East side seemed like it had really decent coverage for OCT.

My ride is similar. I guess you don't want to meet me, either.

Anyone get up the past couple of days?

I'm wondering how melted out and/or crusty it is.

Think it was in reference to the "loud" part, not the car.

Berthoud new snow? FREE Snow Cat Skiing?

Check out wpfree.com for link to the Berthoud Pass Snotel Site ... scroll to the bottom of the page and look in the Snow Depth column for the current sonar reading (updated evey hour w/about 2 hour lag) ... I use it to see how much new snow has fallen up before I go to sleep. (Hopefully you have already been using that site)

Also check out the TGR movie in Winter Park this Wednesday ...

SOMEONE at this movie will win a DAY OF SNOWCAT SKIING on Jones Pass !!!

    see www.tetongravity.com/tour/event.aspx?tid=689 for details.

    thanks, spammy.

You can also just go direct to the snotel site:

Not Berthoud, but it's in the neighborhood - went up to Butler today to check out the new snow, thought with the warm spell since the last real storm coverage might be better there. Indeed, once I got up to treeline, coverage was very nice - didn't hit a thing, and got a few really nice turns in. Lots of action up there today, but still fresh snow to be found without much work. Wondering how Berthoud is doing after the dry spell and the new snow...

Felt like winter on Berthoud today. Top of the pass looked like a resort. Tracked up pretty good. Coverage wasn't bad in HHA. 80/90s were getting hit. Got off the beaten path a little this afternoon for some low angle action.

Put in a skin track with Benners and my wife.

    And enjoyed a few laps.

damn, that looks really nice and rather deep.

were you hitting much? I would imagine 80/90's would be a bit bony yet, but I could be very wrong.
