661 evo pads ? any good for XC?
looking for a light, XC shin only pads, and this seemed like a nice option. get harder when you hit em, softer the rest of the time.

best of both? or crappy for XC and too soft for DH?

pads+xc=?
huh?........................or are you looking for pads you can pedal in. if so these are good up to a point. if its hot, these will make you hotter, but so will most pads.
i have veggie shin guards and they protect great and are comfy. once again they are hot.Read my blog at oilcanracer.blogspot.com

looking for something for some harder XC riders, or longer XC rides in fall temps (legs will be warm, and protected)
I know that shin pads are all warm, but I was wondering if this is any better or worse for that, and if the material holds up to crashes/impact/rocks/etc

There's a big thread in here on them (search d3o maybe), they are great xc pads. I wear my knees on pretty much every ride. And they do a decent job in crash protection.
I'm so hardcore, I'm gnarcore.

I have the d3o elbow and knee pads, and I don't really care for them. I unloaded them on my husband, and he doesn't like them either.
They're sort of hot and tight and binding behind the joints, and just aren't as comfortable as good articulated hard pads.
I have Dainese shin/knee guards at present. They protect the front of the knee and shin only and just have straps in the back, so good ventilation. Most of the time I don't notice them; they articulate really well and don't slip down. I think they're quite reasonable for XC.
The shin guards you're looking at go all the way around. OK if you're trying to avoid the inevitable calf scratches; but it's going to be hot. And most significant injury occurs in the front, at least in my experience.

I ride the kyle strait sixsixone knees which are similar to the evo. I bailed recently and I needed 16 stitches in my shin. I was still keen to ride with the stitches so I rigged up a system of shin only pads to go with the knees. I took these pinner protec knee pads (the double down) that were made out of completely neoprene and had removable plastic pads that slipped out of the main neoprene sheath. I took the plastic out and used them for my shins. Both the shins and knees are neoprene so they are super flexible and comfortable. This system won't prevent against significant impact, however, I raked my shin on my peddle after comming out of a rockface squirley and there was no damage to the stitch, hurt like hell though. They would be full wrap too. If you get the right size they wont even slip down, a have big calfs though but if you are an xc dude it may work for you. Six six one also makes shin only pads to go with the evo knees but they pretty pricey for what they are. If you are looking for smaller knees, six also makes an evo vc knee which is super pinner, i think that they are pointless, but will help against small bumps any bruises.
Edit:
Are the evo good for DH? I would say that this is a relative term. I see people on techie freeride trails wearing full upper body armour, and my buddies sister who races world cup DH doesn't even wear the stuff for races. Pads are all dependant on personal preference, and for xc a big part of the equation I imagine must be comfort.
