    Wow -- absolutely horrible.

No idea about osteonecrosis in particular, but I can certify that my mom -- who got both hips replaced in her mid-60s -- skied better afterwards than before. Caveats include that she probably had a lot better to get than you do.

That said, she's a research scientist and, as you might imagine, researched the living fuck out of the operation before having it. If you want me to introduce you, let me know.

Thanks. this totally took me by surprise. Osteonecrosis is fairly uncommon, blood supply stops to your specific bone - hips in my case - and they just die.

What i have heard (read) up to this point is that falling on a new hips is NOT good, so Doc is saying, taking groomers and staying clear of large gomer crowds would be ok, just understanding that faLLS WILL FUCK YOU UP BAD, RESURGERY STYLE. oops, cap lock. )

Keep the comments up. I'm only 48 and really about to throw up at the inability to stay on my game.

Can't really add any info about the hips but I was diagnosed with Osteonecrosis in my upper tibia when I was 15. Drilled holes into it and it worked really well (at least for 10 years). I then had to have another surgery for a piece of my bone that became dislodged and got stuck in my knee joint.

From there I have had some more knee problems, culminating a little less then two years ago, when my osteoarthritis got so bad my knee started going out on me after strenuous activity. However, the osteonecrosis has thankfully not come back - and this is with no meniscus left and having torn my ACL as well. After talking to a number of people who have had the knees replaced, they are doing much, much better. I would have gone for the replacement had I been older, however I'm still too young so I don't want to have multiple replacements.

No doubt you would have to take it easy for awhile, but after some time I don't see why you couldn't get back to all your normal activities.

Good luck on the holes getting drilled, it worked for me.

Edit: I would add, that even if drilling the holes work, you bone is still pretty damaged, and you have a good chance of osteoarthritis developing as well.

Yeah, that worked out real well for Natasha Richardson.

My mom took a season or two off before being cleared. But she was also 20 years older than you are. I know that she credits her recovery to smart physical therapy, both pre and post surgery, focusing on range of movement and building supportive muscle strength.

My Dad has had a hip replacement, and then had to have it done again 10 years later. The warning is, nothing that produces a shock on the joint, especially straight on, in his case they think the reason he had to have the one side redone is he was in a car accident and they think the impact loosened the join. So I would think, no hucking, and you should probably book yourself on as many cat ski days as you can, and only ski powder. Stay away from those early spring days when the frozen groomers rattle the teeth in your head.

    resurface!

See if you can have a hip resurfacing. Difference is that they cap the head of your femur instead of lopping it off and the hardware can take more impact. I'm in the market myself within a few years and it sounds like absloutely the way to go for youngish folks looking to stay active.

Look here for some info, including stories from folks who have returned to skiing pain free:

    Good luck.

That works great if its caused by arthritis. With Osteonecrosis, the hip bone dies from the inside out, thus necessitating a Total Hip Replacement, or so I have been eductaed that.

Congrats on getting the OK to ski!
I've been kicking myself in the ass since thanksgiving for not taking care of either of my hip scopes last fall. Turns out it would have been the perfect winter to take some time off from skiing afterall.

I picked up some ProTec IPS hip pads. They work alright, but I dont think they would do too much in a rock vs. hip accident.

that is a very quick recoup to be freed to ski again. you'll be fine, there are lots of people who ski, surf, climb, and kayak with fake hips.
i have my hip scope in 7 weeks and they say 6-12 mos before i can do sports. but i also need the other hip done. yay for more disabled list.
    best of luck, have fun.

HOLY FIZZLESTICKS!! That looks like a whole lotta pain, not a lot of fun there PTracy...glad the recovery went well! In your research did you ever read anything about bone-spurs on hips? I had an xray of my hips done while in for an ACL consult and it looks like i have huge bone spurs on both sides of my hips, top and bottom. The doc said i was looking at pretty severe arthritus down the road if i didn't get aggressive about it, and i was just wondering if you remember a good "hip information" website that you might have gotten some info from?
