I'm "self-insured" since I learned that having coverage really doesn't work. I was fully covered and every time I filed a claim, I was told that "that wouldn't be covered" under my policy. Even though it obviously was!
I hated fighting with them, paying huge premiums and deductibles, and then getting dropped after they finally did pay me!

    Insurance is for pussies!

So I take that when you get cancer and don't have the $800,000 you just Man Up and treat it yourself. Or just die?

Actually don't sweat it as we are already socialist as you'll just get the treatments, go bankrupt, the hospital/docs will just write off the fees then raise fees to embed the costs, and everyone else will pay in the form of higher fees and insurance rates.

Now getting 30K for a busted leg and hospital stay, not enough to go bankrupt, but enough to cripple you financially, not so good.

Don't forget, your first example takes place after an lifetime of not paying for insurance (because it is too expensive or no one will insure you) or an equivalent tax for a federal system (because of conservatards and the insurance industry.) So you extract huge value from the system while adding nothing. Great!!!

Yep that is actually the situation I am in. Besides all surgery, scans, etc. I'm sure you would like forking out the ~$20K that I would be getting charged for chemo each cycle.

Not to mention the tib/fib break which wasn't free to have fixed ($50K)

I didn't have insurance for almost 10 years and just got lucky I had insurance for these two incidents.

    Best of luck!!!

What's your take on this as someone right in the bullseye area of all this? - ie you were uninsured for a long time, you've had to use the health care system for serious issues, etc.

I'm certainly no expert but it seems that if you work 40 hours a week you should certainly get health insurance. Expecially younger people who are just joining the work force.... they are more likely to have jobs that shit on them as far as insurance.

For what it is worth I probably would have been diagnosed with cancer 5 years or more ago if I had insurance.

Well Mr. Dromond. I recommend a begging stint on any talk show.
Perhaps Sarah would loan you her tardbaby for added sympathy.

Regardless of whether the current proposal is good enough or not I agree with you that health insurance should be made available to all.

Why do you think you would have been diagnosed earlier? Were you experiencing symptoms but didn't go to the doctor b/c you had no insurance?

Yah I had red blood coming out the ass for the last ten years (sorry no real way to candy coat it). That makes me not so smart but I didn't have insurance in college or the 6 years I worked for a small company after that.
