A serious discussion of banning
As I've said many times before - the administrators here can do whatever they want. It's their site. I've seen plenty website that were way bigger butthurt sandboxes than this place. "Well, if you don't care then why did you create this thread, douchebag?" you may ask? Simple: I'm fascinated with the train of thought that goes on around here. The maggot line of reasoning is interesting to me.
So, with that in mind - what do you chaps think is a banable offense?
Is slanderimg the CEO of a ski hill as a cokehead a banable offense?
Is posting in all caps and using every single post just to stalk somebody and never ever talking about skiing or anything else except the object of your obsessive rage a banable offense?
Is posting somebody's e-mail a banable offense?
Is asking that people "stop being gay, you gay" a bannable offense?
Is making a racial slur a banable offense? Is one race more banable than another?
Is having a shared alias a banable offense? (and by 'shared' I mean you let somebody log in as your aliai for two posts)
Should anybody who's ever insulted you or disagreed with you or challenged your sense of self-worth be banned?
Should nobody ever be banned under any circumstances?
Like I said - I ask because it's interesting to me. Lots of folks here pride themselves on the illusion that this place is like the wild west of ski message boards (unlike Gapic or those queers at realskiers), yet every two months there is yet another uproar over something somebody said and the mindless maggot masses are screaming for banning and moderation. Ahhh... the duality of the maggot.
Anyway - what are your thought on this important subject?

Move upside and let the man go through...

This is a damn slippery slope. The appeal of TGR to me, besides the ski stoke is/was the complete open forum to say just about what you want. You're always free to ignore stupid shit.
Trocanate seems to revel in the attention of being a supposed racist/white supremacist. He may be which makes him an utter an complete asshole in my book, but banning him ?? Other people have said shit just as offensive and way more personal.
Being called gay or fucktard or insect goes with the territory here. Grow some thick skin and let it go. Just my opinion.

No to banning, yes to a more robust ignore fxn.
As you know, Jer, even posters who start out as total fucktard asshats occasionally will settle down and mature into interesting, thoughtful contributors. In with the 9.

You are saying Jer might be an interesting and thoughtful poster someday? I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it.

I agree that is more improbable than someone being relentlessly uninteresting and banal, Rootskier.

What is happening to those people that read a Tron post. Do your eyeballs burn? Violent vomiting? Spontaneous combustion?
I'm on the, "Grow a pair and STFU" wagon.
***Please don't ban me.***

Actually I found Tron rather entertaining. And the guy definitely was no below 90 IQ douchebag like you see in the local circle K. He posted some very nice pictures of fishing, stockcharts, etc. Some of the racial bantering was merely experiments in testing the sensitivities of a select group of people who claim to be radical and freethinkers in the context of their "big mountain" mentality and the web in general. His statements were certainly less threatening than other content on the web such as child pornagraphy which is readily available. Any so called "racial" comments were in alot of cases historical fact but put in a context of controversy. For example, the statement "TGR members could be construed to be of lower IQ than the general populace because of repetitive use of the words GAPER, FUCKTARD, and GAY as a verbal staple" might indeed have merit. If Tron had made that statement he would have singled out TGR members which could have been construed as a "race". His comments were certainly no worse that what you see on CNN or MSNBC or any other of the mainstream message boards.
What's interesting is comments made by some regarding the impact his comments might have on TGR business. I have no doubt any family guy seeing fuck plastered all over the place will find the site offensive and contrary to "family values". Or suggestions that someone "put a .45 in their mouth and pull the trigger".
Fact is, Tron knew which buttons to push to get the responses he was looking for. A few racial slurs, and supposedly rational free-thinkers go bonkers and suggest suicide. The whole incident gave me a refreshing insight into the basic human condition and pervasive intolerance.
Here are examples of posts about Gates I found on MSNBC discussion:
"I don't see in any of these post the fact that Blacks make up only 12% of the population and they commit 70% of all crimes. This has to be in the back of all police officers minds."
Even better:
"There have been more of this "They're picking on me BS in the last 12 months then there has been in the last 12 years, thanks mostly to that half-white."
Another:
""The fact that blacks and Hispanics are picked up more frequently," said Obama.
Maybe that is because they commit the majority of crimes? Ya think?
It's all about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Obama! If you want your race to have more respect, you have to make your race more respectable!"
"And the first thing Gates could do to make his race more respectable is OBEY THE LAW AND SHOW RESPECT FOR THE POLICE."
Another:
"Everyone knows that any incident that involves a black person and white person, that doesn't go the black person's way, is ALWAYS called racism and everyone knows it.
"Many African American, simply cannot accept personal responsibility for their actions and think that they should be able to act and do whatever they want to, without reprocissions, regarless of what the law says.
WAKE UP eveyone, this is not going to change, so stop trying to help their cause...they don't want to help themselves and you'll never succeed."
White cop bashing:
"yep, but this pervasive. We see this behavior starting in Selma in the 1960s and going through the OJ trials, Rodney King, Oklahoma Trooper Martin, and on and on.
Police are BLACK HOSTILE. Police EVERYWHERE are black hostile.
It's a national disease caused by hiring the dregs of white trash thugs for cops. The same idiots who shot up a traffic circle in Baghdad just for fun will be hired by some police department.
Cops are just another street gang."
Now there are more blatant racist comments I could quote but I don't want to be banned from TGR for citing MSNBC.
Not one post on MSNBC contained the word "fucktard" or "fag" which admittedly demonstrates the free speech allowed here.
Now, does anybody have a good amputee joke?Last edited by CravenurdotterII; 07-26-2009 at 03:35 AM.

The point I was trying to make is that many here see this place as being really free and cool and edgy as fuck, when in realty this place is actually about as edgy as a bowling ball. The only reason dopes think this place is the home of edgy free-thinkers is because they themselves are insufferably midiocre and narrow-minded.
Just look at all the BAN HIM!!! episodes of the past. Remember when these idiots were screaming for 0BrenhardFranz's blood when he dared to make the statement that people die?
On the other hand (as Craven said) certain people here can wish all kinds of horrible death on other members or even make jokes about their dead mothers and nobody notices.

I know several people who were planning to buy several TGR dvds until they saw people using the word "fucktard" and encouraging suicide. Cancelled their orders pronto.
Took the money and bought epic coffee mugs instead.
They did enjoy the gun threads though and acquired more ammo for the coming apocalypse.

Jer, I've usually enjoyed your posts and found them amusing, occasionally quite witty, and usually at worst, inane.
However, the issues that spawned this discussion is not about people being edgy, witty, or funny. Trolling can be an art and greatly amusing and people do get their feelings banged. However, if you think that was some brilliant trolling, then you must think that dynamite is a tool of the skilled sports fisherman and I am disapointed.Originally Posted by blurred

I don't think what Tron did was brilliant - it's pretty easy to get people worked up by throwing around a few slurs. This thread isn't about how brilliant Tron is/was - it's about people's perceptions and subjectivity and (ultimately) hypocrisy.
Epic has coffee mugs now? WHAT THE FUCK AM I WASTING MY TIME HERE FOR!!!????

To Jer's original question, I think it's well summed up by Justice Potter's famous quote about pornography: "I know it when I see it"
I don't think bannable stuff is as cut and dry as the list in the first post, I think it's more of a sum of it's parts kind of thing.

You might have a point about a bunch interweb badasses (real, poseur, or somewhere in between) sometimes turning out to be a bunch of shrinking violets but wasn’t Tron banned in part for being relentlessly tedious? He had his moments, but too much noise, not enough signal and not enough funneh.
All of the banable offenses ::Yawn:: listed mostly apply when the person is always on message: the stalker who never stops stalking, the asshat (left, right; who cares?) that turns every post into a political speech, the racist who never gives it a rest. Whatever.
After a while it becomes SPAM and TGR bans spammers.

You've never once answered any question I posed to you, why should I answer yours? (<- I'm not expecting an answer to this retorical question)
There are plenty of stalkers and asshats here who's never become the object d'obsession of the BAN THEM!!! crowd. Gogo above is a classic example of an alias who's never done anything but stalk. Talk about tedious - he can't even stay in charactor. Let's afce it - The Rulz only apply to some. Thankfully The Suitnazi has retired, so maybe things will loosen up around here a bit.

I for one can't think outside the box so I come here to see the views of those who do. Unless it involves the threat of actual personal injury I say game on.

You're overlooking the emo damage some readers have been forced to deal with. You can see the pain of this mistreatment in the replies to these unnerving posts.
This is a real and debilitating injury and must be mitigated in some way to prevent this terrible injustice that harms so many by so few.
