Thread: Powder Coating in SLC?

SLC Mags,
I need suggestions for a soild powder coating shop in SLC. After much debate, I decided to keep the Jamis Dragon 29 frame I have as it's Reynolds 853 and a great ride, I just hate the colors and have always wanted to PC a bike. Do I need to cork the BB/ST/HT or will tape work?

Any suggestions welcome as I am a total JONG when it comes to this stuff.

Check out wasatch abrasive... off of the California Ave. exit. Though I didn't do the powder coating, they sand-blasted my bike, and they were very good to deal with.

So they do both sand-blasting and PC'ing? Thanks!

He said all their frames were done here and they could do small jobs too. I never got around to using them, but I trust him.

You could send it off to Olympic. They've done a bike frame or two, so they know what to paint and what to mask.

Thinking about getting my SS powder coated. Any new recommendations?

Why not just take it somewhere to get a good epoxy paint on it? I'm not sure pc is much more durable, you can wrap the downtube and other wear areas in clear film.

Not sure which companies they're doing these days, but historically they did a lot of the Schwinns (think bassboat), Yetis, and bunch of Rockshox stuff. I had them do a simple matte red frame for me - it looks awesome and it's as close to un-scratchable as any coating I've seen on a bike.

Not in SLC either but I'm gonna chime in with my 2 cents on PC.

I had my Wilson done last season by Top Gun coatings in Calgary and the shop claimed that it would plug/mask any surface I had marked with a grease pen. When I got the frame back this was not so much the case.

I had to spend quite a bit of time with a dremel cleaning pc out of the frame pivots on the rear triangle so that I could press new bearings in. I also had to get my headtube and bottom bracket refaced so that the cups/bearings would sit flush.

You may want to call ahead and find out exactly what the shop you choose uses for masking and do it yourself. Next time I get a frame done I will definitely do the masking myself. Despite these issues pc is amazingly tough for a frame and it looks really good when it is done.

Issue with masking your self is that what you do probably won't hold up to baking at 800 degrees.

Tim I had Metals Finishing do the Rims on my truck. Very reasonable cost and included all prep work. Finish looks real nice and has proven to be quite durable, have one or two chips after 2 1/2 years but you can hardly tell.

Not sure what they do with bikes but prolly worth a call to chat with him.
