Gotama or Mojo?
I want to pick-up stix from 2004 before the season starts. This means that I'll have to buy blindly with no demoing. I am looking for a fat ski that can handle variable snow conditions, as well as some short radius turns when needed. A light-weight set-up, with torsional stability is a must (I aslo hate the chatters).
There is one last pair of Volkl Gotama's in town, in a perfect length (176cm) for a 5"6 girl. Firstly, with 105mm under-foot I wonder if this is too much suface area for me to ski consistently (currently on a 178 cm mid-fat with no twin-tip)? Also I heard about some of the sidewall issues with the older Gotama's but I am unsure what year had defectives. Is buying the last pair of 2004 Gotama's a wise buy? Also the shop that has these wants to throw Marker GC 1200s on there (my din is 7.5). Are the Rossi/look bindings all that they're cracked up to be...they feel really heavy?
The other options I've been considering are the HEAD mad trix MOjo, or the Rossi B2W. I dont usually to huck much, but I love steeps, and trees and pow. Anyone had the good fortune or demoing or riding these?
thanx

You're comparing vastly diffrent skis there. Can't say anything about the mojo but I would deffinantly skip the B2w. And yes last years Gotama's are the ones that had side wall problems.
If your seriously looking at and would consider all three of those skis, I would recommend that consider the Volkl Explosive. More versitile then any of what you listed and would do what your looking for well. You'll also be able to throw thwm about in the trees betterWhat are they offering the Gotama's for?
You'll also find that the general consensus around here is Anti-Marker, and the 1200 toepieces tend to get loose around 30 days, not falling off loose bet there ends up alot of play in the interface. So put what YOU want to on the skis, not what the shop wants to.
What ski are you on now, what do you like/dislike about them?If things seem in control, Your just not going fast enough.

Comparing Mojos and gotamas are like apples and oranges..
Got a chance to try out Mojos for few laps last winter.Cant make a
longer rewiev.
quick imperessions were:
-sturdy
-stiff
-landings on hardpack difficult due the stiffness of tail
-edeghold surprisingly "bad" for such a stiff ski.edges wasnt prime A grades but still..
-quite heavy
Gotama (own a 04pair) is a superfunny ski. Not a allrounder,
but still i spent most of my days last season on it.
Sucks on windblown hardpack and tracked out snow.
Edgehold on hard snow is very good, on very steep snow the ski is predictable due the low sidecut; you wont get hung up by tip and tail that easily.
I personally wouldn´t have it as a one quiver ski, but since you
have a nother pair for hard days, it could be a viable option.
More reading youll find with search function...
Personally havent had any issues with the sidewalls, but i can imagine they are prone to crackin if you are a heavy abuser (as many of riders from this board are.)
There were some talk that the cracking is an cosmetic only issue, since the wooden sidewall is a glue-on. the core (supposedly) was protected from cracking and moisture even if the sidewall was cracked. Didnt get any confirmation to it though.
And reading of Marker vs. Rossi game you can find with the search function.
The game is something like 87 - 4 at the moment.
I have never been good with facts.

I just sent my gotamas to volkl for the sidewall cracking issue, so I should be riding the 05's this year. Do you need the twin? I rode mine around tahoe all season, not perfect, but pretty decent all around ski for me. I would definitely not recommend the markers, as I am sure most people here would not. Markers=the suck.

Just say no to Marker.
Markers on G4's -> set to 10
Looks on Explosiv's -> set to 7 1/2
Same skier, same lenght, same no huck style. The markers kept releasing at the most inconvenient times.
Go with Look/Rossi or Salomon.

I think we should all make a move to drive marker out of business. Or atleast out of our market segment, as they have no reason to try to sell to us.

I have gotamas and B2, and actually have almost nothing to add to what has been said..... just let me tell that gotamas + B2 are a good quiver (B2 are fine for hard snow days, otherwise GO GOTAMA!), none of the two alone is a good quiver. A good one-ski quiver....... explosives, yeah, but I would personally prefere more user-friendly B3. Mntlion's explosives, though, are a really HUGE deal. You will not demo them, but they're cheap and easy to sell again in case you do not like'em

09-07-2004, 10:46 PM #11Well, the Gotamas are going for $800 CAD or 620 USD. My old skis are relics, circa 2001 Dynastar Renegades (wood core). Nice ski, forgiving, fun...but chattery, doesn't have the edge-hold of sidewall construction AND they are way too skinny-68mm under foot. Plus, I would love a little more springy-ness, although that would be a function of ski age. I think they called those mid-fats back then. I've got some 4yr old Fritchi touring bindings on 'em. I guess I am not very hard on my gear, those skis still give 'er though, even after I've pounded though everything with them, but then I'm a small person.Originally posted by karma

So the Look P12/P14 or Fritchi freerides eh? I really want to tour this winter since my old favorite hill closed for good, but there don't seem to be that many ppl touring in Calgary (too many rednecks). Plus, I already have my touring set-up...although you can't lose with two pairs. I haven't seen any explosivs in my length yet, but the season is still along way away.
Also in terms of a mounting point...I know I should probably get them centered... but I've heard recommendations that girls should have them mounted slightly forward to counteract the lower/further back center of mass. If they should be forward how much? (5mm?)

That's all fine and dandy, but the important quesiton still remains to be answered. Just how funky are you?Originally posted by funky_monkey
blah blah blah... skis...bindings... Calgary... mount... the monkey
Please answer before Phunk feels his f(ph)unkiness is in adequate. He is the coolest mother phunker on the planet and if he attempts to add to it to intimidate another funky person such as yourself, he may explode.
Also, a high amount of funkiness would indicate that you do not need more Mojo and in that case, choose the Gotomas. A low amount of funkiness would indicate that you need more Mojo. How ever, if this 'funk' is actually relating to the fact that you smell bad, none of this applies.

Hey, monkey, I'm funky enough and I've got some MoJo!!!
To be accurate - I've got a 2x186cm of MoJo... my MoJo is very stiff and definetely not a lightweight setup... my MoJo loves to go fast.oh shit here comes the ground!

09-08-2004, 12:55 PM #14To answer your question, I'm feelin pretty damn funky right now. Plus I got soul brotha! No matter how sad I might feel, some good funk always makes me smile and dance. I'm pretty torn between the Mojo and the Gotama... I have skiied many a volkl before and I have always been satisfied. And even though bigger is not always better, I'm feelin the need for a really big ski this year. Plus if this weather holds...it will be a really cold/wet winter. Snow was falling last weekend when I was out riding in the mountains-our summer is officially over.Originally posted by phUnk

Why do you like the mojos so much, better control, or just jives with your style?

I think it is easier if you decide on ski geometry and construction before brand shopping.
Those skis are pretty diff. The mojo is very shaped and the Gotama is straight. I have skied the latter and I loved them. I didn't feel they were too big for non-pow conditions.
If you want something with little sidecut but better hard snow performace that the gotama check out the Suggar Daddy, Explosive, Stormrider, B3, ...

09-08-2004, 01:23 PM #16Mntlions exploders are a great deal. I used them as my everyday ski last season with scratch bc's for the powder days. The cmh's were the perfect ski for Kicking Horse or the backside of Louise when everything was chopped up. Lots of maggots using them as their touring ski and they seem to be perfectly happy with them.I really want to tour this winter since my old favorite hill closed for good, but there don't seem to be that many ppl touring in Calgary (too many rednecks)
There are a few of us from the board planning on doing a lot more touring this year, if you get set-up and want to join - send a pm.
And, yeah - closing Fortress really sucked.
