Thread: Simple Movie editor for Windows

I searched but most threads are about more complex or feature rich video editors.

I'm quite happy with the limited functionality of windows movie maker except that it won't edit MOV files.

I have a Panasonic Lumix camera and I also have a Canon G10 both of which take decent web quality video but in MOV format.

I've got the Bink and Smacker Rad video tools utility which converts MOV to AVI but its a pain in the ass to keep converting all the time. I'd just as soon just edit the MOV files.

Suggestions please?

Sony Vegas is super simple and can be scaled up if you feel the need to get more creative.

While not on PC anymore, my days with Vegas were good.

What are the formats that the cameras are auctually recording? Ex: MPEG 4, Motion JPEG, blah, blah, blah. If the format that the cameras working in is something that WMM supports then you should be able to get a plugin that will read the formatting of the mov container. Well if WMM supports plugins. Quicktime plugin architecture rocks, but I believe that windows wants plugins for video specific to applications.

They record MOV files which are a MPEG 4 format. I've looked for a Windows Movie Maker plugin but that doesn't seem to exist. There is a Windows Media Player plugin so I can play MOV files but that doesn't seem to help WMM open MOV files. Annoying stuff

Bump to see if there is anything new on this front. All I want to do is stitch together a few clips of my son riding his bike for my folks but there seem to be no free options for even ultra-basic MOV editing. I have tried two MOV->AVI converters (RAD Video and Pazera) and neither have worked.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you tried mpeg streamclip?

Streamclip looks like it may be the ticket. I'll give it a shot tonight and report back, thanks.

And just to expand a little on the MOV->AVI conversion problems, with Pazera the output file only had audio and with RAD the output file didn't play at all.

Windows Moviemaker? It's included in your software, I'm sure.

are you on windows 7? windows LIVE movie maker does .movs. you have to wait a while for it to "process" the video upon loading it but after that it works fine.

Why are you using conversion software to try and edit video?

He's just bumping together clips, not "editing," but you have a point.

Tried it and liked it so I bought it a few years ago. Was good then, probably even better now.

No, bought my computer during the short time that Vista existed unfortunately. I tried WLMM but it didn't seem to recognize the files.

I was trying to get them into avi so I could edit with WMM. It's all moot now though, Streamclip worked great.

Gotcha! mpeg streamclip is an invaluable tool. I use it daily. Can't believe that shit is free. I'd absolutely pay $100 for it if that is what it cost.

should do. but do yourself a favor and upgrade to win 7. it's by no means perfect but a helluva lot better than vista.
