Black Keys
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

Hope this is the "Rock" you're looking for....
King's X....been around a long time, and often overlooked which blows my mind.
Paul Gilbert rocks hard on the prog side, but he loves his simple rock too.
3rd or 4th on CLUTCH....Robot Hive/Exodus is my fav.
Newer Every Time I Die is more "Rock" than their previous "metal", but I think they kill it (when they arent drunk). If you can stand some screaming...

Third or fourth the Sword. No Blues?!! Don't listen to any recent Clutch, then, and definitely dismiss Tuckerman's Black Keys suggestion <your loss>. Check out Fu Manchu and QOTSA.

The Toadies (though I thought the Burden Brothers run was a little better)
Sevenfold (not Avenged Sevenfold, though I like them and they might qualify, but their vocals aren't for everybody)
Chrome 44 (preferably before they changed vocalists)
Puddle of Mudd
Ghoulunatics kinda venture into deathmetal but I like themThe killer awoke before dawn.

Already have lots of QOTSA and Fu Manchu (rocking to them right now).
All I'm after with this whole "no blues" thing is avoiding heavier riffified 12 bar blues a la AC/DC or Led Zeppelin. Aside from that, it's all fair game.
Clutch and Black Keys, upon first searching (myspace page), are fine.
The Sword and others (QOTSA, Priestess) are great suggestions but they're almost too dark. Same w/ High on Fire. Great riffs and solid sound all around though.
You know how Appetite for Destruction was a bit lighter sounding? That's what I'm going for. Valient Thorr is close, Disarm and Falling Red are close. Apocalypse Dudes by Turbonegro is on the right track. Mid-era Hellacopters. THAT'S what I'm looking for.
However, I am learning about all sorts of stuff that I will most likely purchase, so keep the suggestions coming!Putting the "core" in corporate, one turn at a time.

Mondo Generator - it was an early QOTSA side project that's sort of evolved into its own entity.

A few more, although I'm starting to see a pattern developing here. Great thread though. I'm always looking for more hard rocking bands.

How in the hell has nobody mentioned Chevelle? They are 2 brothers and and in-law. Amazing hard hitting sound from a trio and even better live.

Good bump.
Probably not really what the OP is looking for, but it sorta fits into this thread. Meandering instrumental guitar based rock.

Too lazy to post youtube links but:
High on Fire (someone said it on the first page as well)
Also, these two are outside the traditional hard rock / metal paradigm:
Dinosaur Jr. - Their last two albums sound as if you wouldn't have wanted to be within 1/4-mile of J. Mascis' amps during the recording (probably not far from the truth given the reputation of their live shows).
Chavez - Ride the Fader. This is from the mid-90s but you'd never know.
Edit: Also, is High on Fire a great name for a band or what?We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

If you haven't heard it yet, check out Slash's new CD. He's gotta different singer on every tune, Ozzy, Lemmy, Chris Cornell to name a few. It does not
