Thread: Any Salomon Czar updates

I've read the reviews on the Czars and most people seemed to like them,
anyone have a bunch of days on a pair and care to share your long term impressions?

Are you trying to make your wife crazy by buying more skis?

quite simply the most fun powder skis out there. They will blow your mind. I should be a salemans specifically for the czar b/c i like them so much.

The only weakness would be that they aren't an ice/hardpack ski. Trust me if you are under 6'-2" and 200lbs the 182 is WAY more then enough ski for anyone. There is a reason that all the solomon guys - abma (yes he is short), douglas, cody, and sammy are raving about them.

So whats the reason they're making a 190 next year if the 182 is enough for anyone?

Because some people are over 6'2" and 200? Also, it's a good way to take advantage of the small but significant "morons who buy skis that are way too big for them because other morons on internet message boards think anything under 190 is a girl ski" demographic.

I'm 6'1" 190 and this ski is perfect for straightlining shit, but also perfect for little jibs, tight tress, slashing, playing, etc...

IMO, the 190 would make this a one dimensional ski, bombing only.

I have a pair and I really like them. I think if I could only take one pair of skis somewhere for an extended period, I'd take these. My only gripe about them is in really heavy snow. Like Mt. Baker when it dumps but gets really warm (like 30-34 degrees). In that super heavy shit they just didn't have enough surface area to deal well. The caveat is I weigh over 200 with all my gear on, and I have them mounted on the line that is more forward. The day before in more normal, colder fresh pow, I really liked them.

With that said, I think the 190 is a more appropriate size for me, but I'm a heavy dude. Anybody between 130-195 should absolutely love this stick. I still love it despite being a bit too heavy for it. It's fun as shit bouncing around in trees. And on days where I don't need to float (Less than 6 inches of pow, or tracked out pow) the 182 is $.

I don't think this is true if you mounted them on the more forward "progressive" line (or whatever the more forward line is called).

AMEN!!!!! There are way too many ubers that think anything less than a 194XXL is sally who themselves can't ski worth a damn (and would benefit from a shorter ski). With that said, there are plenty of guys, esp here, that can benefit the longer stiffer sticks. There is a reason that many skis are still made in the longer lengths, but for resort/sidecountry jaunts, the mid-length skis are great.

I really want to try this ski, heard so much good about it, I'm 5'10, 205, probably 220-225 with gear on, wondering what size would be better, sounds like the 182 would be money for tree skiing.

The Shogun sounds kind of interesting as well, smaller dimensions but bamboo (super poppy?), dunno how it would ski, maybe it's just a gun with rocker for marketing purposes.

I'd go 190 and mount forward for you for trees, but if you really only wanted a hop around, tight turning ski, you'd still have shit tons of fun on the 182.

Shogun is too skinny for my tastes. Maybe I'd use it as a park ski/hasn't snowed in a few days ski.

Picked up the last pair of 182's from Porters for $480.

Just mounted 182's tele w/ Bombers, boot center over trad line. Quite simply, the most fun I've had on skis since 1st grade. Obviously, they rock in pow but I was so surprised and impressed at how they tore up hardpack. It only took one day to realize all my other skis are going on Craigslist. Next step is a second pair with Dukes. Good to hear a 190 is slated for next year for taller, heavier guys.

On the other hand I'm tired of the attitude when I go into the shop and they insist I should be on 183's or some such nonsense. I'm 6'1" 235 and my X-Wing Lab 198's are my everyday ski. Will be definitely checking out the Czar 190 and the Lahsa 196 next year.

I think I read that you also skied on Rockers. How would you compare the two skis?

Got out the Czar's Sunday - it was a refrozen/half frozen/icy/slushy day. The czar's rocked. Good edge grip on the groomers. and they plowed the crud with no problems. I mounted on the progressive line as per Alkasquawlik suggestion.I like the location for the firm stuff, I can really pressure the tips. I'll bet they're even better on soft snow. If it ever snows here again I'll try them in these conditions..
