Bariloche Chairlift Accident
Not sure if anyone posted this yet, but looks like a detachable chair at Catedral had a serious derailment on Wednesday.
More info. can be found at here (Spanish):

From the full article, sounds like they are blaming poor maintenance for the accident.

What the.....? How does that happen?
I guess it's like when somebody couldn't hold onto the rope back at good ol' Nashoba Valley.

Ice, I'm guessing the grip fails and by the time it hits the chair behind it, it has enough momentum to knock that one loose as well. The accident looks similar to the one earlier this year at Big Squaw, Maine.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say about the rope tow at Nashoba Valley, one guy can't hold on and everybody piles into him and crashes.
Good times.

Same accident that happened in Whistler back in the early 90's.
To add to the drama of that resort, 22 students died in an inbounds avalanche 3 years ago due to poor safety standards.

That sucks a lot more than loosening your grip on the rope tow so that people crash into you and you all fall down.

Here's the question, if you saw that thing coming at you, would you jump off? Knowing it was either jump or have your legs squished.

Whoa! That sucks.
Having ridden that before, wow.
However, this gives me an ample forum to say that the Baraloche nightlife KICKS ASS!
That is all.

08-12-2004, 11:32 PM #20Yeah, that's why I was wondering about if this lift was a Yan or not. I doubt Catedral will make sweeping changes and replace any of their high speeds with Dopp/Poma or CTEC like Whistler did.Originally posted by teamdirt

On a more positive side, hey Colin, any plans to take home the Las Lenas dancing crown again from Refugio restaurant and cover all the familes eating dinner in champagne?

This same kind of accident happened in Abisko,Sweden, couple of weeks ago. One girl lost her life and 3 other persons was injured. Might even be exactly same kind of lift? Some swedes might now better.
Bummer.I have never been good with facts.

Rescue workers working to recover body in Patagonia avalanche
Tue Sep 3, 2:29 PM ET
BARILOCHE, Argentina - Rescuers poked ski poles through packed snow Tuesday, searching for a climber buried in a weekend avalanche that killed eight college students as they trained in Argentina's Patagonia region.
One body was recovered and at least one other was thought to be trapped deep in hardened snow, said rescue worker Ramon Chiocconi.
He said weather conditions were complicating the two-day search atop Ventana mountain.
"The terrain is difficult and the snow is packed so tight it's difficult to dig through," Chiocconi said.
The avalanche hit a group of 20 physical education students on Sunday as it swept down a mountain near the Andean ski resort of Bariloche, 1,745 kilometers (1,090 miles) southwest of the capital, Buenos Aires.
The students at the local Comahue state university were completing training exercises when the avalanche struck.
Rescue efforts were suspended early Tuesday because of fears of another avalanche, but later resumed. Forecasts of rain left conditions dangerous, Chiocconi said, but rescuers were continuing to comb the mountain using ski poles, shovels and sniffer dogs.
Seven Students Killed in Argentina Avalanche
Mon Sep 2, 7:06 PM ET
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - An avalanche swept down a mountainside where a group of college climbers were training in Argentina's Patagonia region, killing at least seven students, police and rescue workers said on Monday.
Rescue workers searched the mountain for two students missing after the avalanche hit late on Sunday near the ski resort of Bariloche, 500 miles south of Buenos Aires.
"So far we have seven dead and two that are missing," said Ramon Chiocconi, a doctor who is part of a rescue team from Bariloche.
"There is little possibility that we will find them (the missing students) alive because the snow is very wet and heavy and the avalanche was strong. Many of the victims were literally crushed by the snow," he added.
Six other climbers from the nearby Comahue University were injured, police saidLast edited by powslut; 08-13-2004 at 12:53 AM.
