Jackson Hole MR to open The Crags
Jackson Hole to Open ‘The Crags’ This Season
« Back to Daily News
August 10, 2004
Jackson Hole, Wyo. (Ski Press)-For the first time in the history of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, the Crags terrain will be opened to the public this season.
Previously a permanently closed inbounds area, this provides approximately 200 acres and 1000 vertical feet of expert terrain located above the popular Casper Lift area. Bowls, chutes and tree skiing all accessible via the Headwall “Stairway to Heaven” or from the top of Apres Vous. For an averagely fit, expert skier the hike will range in length between 25-35 minutes.
The Crags will be snow controlled and have a similar opening schedule as Casper Bowl and the Headwall based on weather conditions.
“For experts this terrain will surely become a new “mecca” and we can’t wait to get it open. Kudos to operations and Ski Patrol for figuring out a plan that will achieve what has previously been unworkable,” commented Jerry Blann, JHMR President. In addition to the new boundary that includes the Crags, this years’ JHMR trail map has named many existing runs that previously were unnamed.
In celebration of the new terrain, JHMR will offer an exclusive package for expert skiing and snowboarding guests. This package includes:
Four nights lodging in a Teton Village two bedroom, two bath condominium with Jackson Hole Resort Lodging, 3 day lift ticket at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and a JHMR Mountain Guide for one half day AM (4 hrs) with pre-public mountain access. This access will allow guests to be the first on the mountain and get fresh tracks in the Crags and other areas. While waiting for the mountain to officially open guests will be able to wait in the Bridger Gondola barn or Corbet’s Cabin where coffee and refreshments will be available.
Valid dates January 3 – February 9, 2005. Package based on 4 people. FOMO: www.jhrl.com.

I always love to hear about inbounds terrain expansion ! This just means 200 more acres for maggots to devour at the summit. Nice report KM.

Nice. I like seeing inbounds expansion. That means that something has progressed. Either they think they can now control it better, or they finally think that there are enough people that want and can rip it. I don't know much about Jackson, but if they had it closed it will surely be sick terrain.

It's not where Coombs was caught. He was caught right next to the Cirque in an area that is now part of the headwall area.
No pics of the crags. We did that hike all the time, but illegaly, and weren't about to go down the front side when there was Granite sweetness waiting on the backside!
Definitely good news. There will be some east coast gapers that will probably get cliffed out.

I'm sure you've never called a kook a kook as they got their ass handed to them while surfing Topanga Mr. Righteous.

and no, i've never dropped and dinged my board while trying to tip-toe across the low tide rocks ever.
and no, i've never seen anyone with sports chalet rented equipment slide down the entire face of mammoth either, b/c everyone on the west coast rips.

The Crags are shown on the trail map.
I'll just link it here, since it's a pretty large jpeg, but look directly above the Casper chair:

I'm guessing The Crags are in the background of this pic because this is the Casper chair:

Can anyone confirm this?

The area above and to the left of the chair is Casper Bowl (which is what is primarily shown in the photo).
Directly above the chair as well as above and to the right is The Crags... it dumps into Moran Woods/ Moran Faces.
A better view of the crags would be from the top of the Apres Vous lift looking left (looker's left).
This is some burl terrain but also has some areas that will be big fun powder stashes as it dumps into the Moran Faces.
EDIT: Ooops... Casper Bowl not Headwall (which is Looker's Left above the Gondola)Last edited by slim; 08-10-2004 at 01:51 PM.

Here's the map, with The Crags helpfully labeled. The hike up is a leg burner.

Here is Casper Bowl, which is just to skier's right of the Crags. The crags is nastier, and I think I have a pic at home. Hopefully I can post tonight.
