    Soreness... (calling fitness gurus)

    ...is a bitch.

    This is probably a question for the noobs at Gapicski, but I don't like them. I saw a fitness related question here a week or so ago, so I hope it's not completely ruled out as feasible.

    Anyway, anyone have any remedies? I started a seriously hardcore leg workout the other day, and 3 days later I am still sore. I am about to go again today to do my legs and back, and I have a whole freaking workout planned for the entire winter. Long distance aerobic traning, lots of weights, some sprints, and balance work. I do legs twice a week, but they hurt like hell for a long time. I have been stretching a lot, working on flexibility, but since I am so sore it makes me wonder if I am stretching enough (15 minutes, every muscle in my body once a day and twice on leg day).

    I take protein (isopure, pretty much straight up protein) to try to rebuild what I lose. I drink lots of water and have done everything I can think to do. I know i'll be sore having just started this regimen, but is there any way to minimize it (i.e. sport legs? Does that shit really work?)

    Any remedies for soreness besides "don't workout, jong! ski!!!" would be dandy.

    And if I'm gonna get hosed for this, let me know, and it will be gone in a flash.

    Max, c'mon, man. You need a hobby, bad. If you weren't sore, something would be wrong. A remedy for being sore? Don't excersise.

    Not talking about eliminating it, Rev. Just ways to mollify.

    AKA does sport legs really work like silly mohawk man says it does? I'd be curious to find out.

    Got it. Drink lots of water after excercise. And believe it or not, I've got a mtb partner that swears by that sportsleg stuff. I use Cytomax on longer rides. It's an endurance mix that seems to help a bit...enough that I notice it, at least.

    Stretch a SHIT LOAD. Something I'm working on. And make sure you're balancing your muscles...i.e. work your abs AND your back.

    Finally, if I'm really sore to the point of legitimate pain, I'll pop a few advil.

    Eat bananas. Potassium is good for relieving muscle pain, more specifically cramps, because it counter-acts the lactic acid that builds up in your legs.

    That and lots of water will help.

    I'll add my endorsements for the stretching and the bananas. Also, since you said you just started the workout, that might be a reason why you're still sore. Oh, and work on your core - abs & back - just as much as your legs. that's a HUGE advantage in helping to keep you stable and in control on your skis.

    ...and I'll add my endorsment to the "sport legs" stuff, I don't care if it really works, but my brain thinks it does, and that's good enough for me! Get some!

    He's the key: don't be such a pussy.

    If you just started working out, you're gonna be sore for a few days. It's just the way it works. When I don't do legs for a while, I'm sore for a good 3-5 days. And that's with stretching, lots of water, bananas, etc.

    I don't know if this works after anaerobic workouts like weightlifting, but for aerobic things like running, get an empty garbage can or fill you tub up with icy cold water (read as much ice as you can round up in LA) and put your legs in it for 10 minutes or so, until they go numb then awhile more. This will be hard to stand at first, but you will feel so much better the next morning. It will also get you ready for the cold of winter coming from LA. Some people also claim by those leg massage stick things.

    Actually I forgot about this. It works like a charm for weightlifting too. The absolute best thing you can do after a workout is take a long, cold shower. I'm not talking about lukewarm, I mean COLD. It's the equivalent of icing your body down. Go ahead and get cleaned up quickly in warm water first, but then turn off the hot dial and hit up your muscles for good long while. It will cut your recovery time in half if not more. I'm not exaggerating.

    The whirlpools that professional athletes use are generally filled with ice. It's the best way to quickly recover.

    Ahnold would alternate 2 minutes of COLD water with 2 minutes of HOT water in his showers to help recovery.

    Of course, he also showered with a bunch of other guys...

    It's called DOMS- delayed onset muscle soreness. It generally peaks 48 hours after a workout.

    Many of the remedies listed above are good; water, stretching, ice bath, contrast showers.

    Also look into easy aerobic exercise in the days after. It only gets worse if you avoid the soreness, suck it up and slowly warm up and get the blood flow going. This helps the body flush out the things that are making you sore. Plus, after getting the body warm you are more limber and able to focus on doing some good post activity stretching.

    Your leg muscles (particularly the quads) are the biggest ones; so they take the longest to recover. It's ok to work out if they're a little sore; but if they're moderately sore or worse, they need more time to recover. Your workout will be unfruitful from a strengthening standpoint if you don't give the muscles enough time to recover.

    If you're too sore, use more lube. Those LS900 workouts can be tough.

    max - massaging your legs a little might help, in addition to everyone elses recommendations, i say drink more water.

    oopsie: get an indo board or do some yoga.
