Well making assumptions when there are possibly two people caught in avalanche debris is being a dick, pain and simple.

(KSL News) Two people were rescued from an avalanche in the back country south-east of the Brighton Ski Resort.
The avalanche occurred around 1:30 p.m. in backcountry in the Back Door area at Pioneer Peak, which is south-east of the Brighton Ski Resort.
Both people were trapped, one partially, but were able to escape. Both are in good condition.
Search and rescue has since been canceled.
Officials categorized the avalanche as a Class 3. A Class 5 avalanche is the largest.

And the winner of this pissing match is MPPG. Since it is now being reported it was two snowboarders with no avy gear.

Just got down,
It was 2 snowboards who went out the Crest gate. I talked to the patroller who was at the gate when they went out. He asked them if they had any avy gear, they said 'no', and they asked about the avy rating. Patroller said considerable with more dangerous pockets due to windloading (and pointed to the wind loaded slope they dropped in on).
Crown was 10-12 feet.
Boarder dropped in just left of the tree on the ridge line (between tree and small rock sticking up on the ridge line). Sorry for the cruddy photos, I just had my crackberry on me. Gunder's job is safe.
Photos taken from around the patrol shack at the top of Crest lift.Last edited by sfotex; 01-07-2009 at 07:07 PM.

hmm.. we probably saw a SAR vehicle headed up around that time.. from a lift at Soli.
and yea, the amount of dumbass snowboarders (I ride too, fwiw) who go OB at Brighton all the time makes it a pretty easy assumption for MPPG, unfortunately. sucky to say, but it definitely is a ticking timebomb most of the time. these lucky were some lucky bastards.
sfotex, didn't know you were there during the week - have a pass there too, we should meet up at some point.current ventures:

Not joking.
Considerable=Natural avalanches possible, human triggered avalanches probable.
High=Natural and human triggered avalanches likely.
Probable or likely? Either way the kids took a ride and got lucky.
Pick one, don't confuse the issue being cute.
In addition
For better or worse, the following definitions came out of this meetimg and have been used now for 13 years:
Low: Mostly stable snow. Avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets on steep snow-covered slopes and gullies.
Moderate: Areas of unstable snow. Avalanches are possible on steep, snow-covered open slopes and gullies.
High: Mostly unstable snow. Avalanches are likely on steep snow-covered open slopes and gullies.
Extreme: Widespread areas of unstable snow. Avalanches are certain on some steep snow-covered slopes and gullies. Large destructive avalanches are possible.
A controversy over the value of this system began shortly after it was introduced and continues today. Some forecasters found the system too general, and tried adding more categories such as "lowmoderate" and "moderate-high". Some tried adding more detail to the definitions (and then retreated when they found themselves too restricted). Some have tried to fine-tune the definitions by separating the likelihood of natural versus triggered releases. Some use elevation, aspect, and slope angle to differentiate between hazard categories. Some hate the word "pockets". Some hate the word "moderate". Some say replace the word "hazard" with the word "instability". Some hate the system and think the public doesn't understand it, so they don't use it. Some like the system and think the public likes it, so they use it.Last edited by wra; 01-07-2009 at 07:23 PM.
