Thread: BD Havoc mounting point - anyone ski them forward of "suggested"?

I was trying to figure out where to mount tele bindings on my new BD Frantics last night, and of course, got to thinking too much... When I was mapping out the Frantics, I thought the mount point was QUITE A BIT back. My other two pair of skis are at about midcord +2 cm & +3 cm, and I like how they ride. I'm sure I'll put them a bit forward of the suggested point - probably about 2 cm.

I mounted my Havocs (05-06, 183cm, "greenies") back in October at "alpine center" according to the mid-sole mark for AT. They suggest mounting tele at 93cm (midcord +1.5cm) from the tail.

It looks like I'm at 96 (!!!), a bit forward to say the least. I'll try them out though - they look similar to where an alpine mount might be. Of course, I figure all of this out after he fact, and have them all mounted up...go figure. I'm thinking that since these are "twins" so to speak, that it won't be a big deal since you lose about 6 cm because of the tail upturn anyway, and I usually like my alpine skis mounted a bit on the "forward" side of things as well.

I won't be using them as a powder board or anything like that, so float isn't really an issue.

I'm just wondering... Anyone with much experience with these?

If I remember right my havocs (first gen) are mounted +2 or +3cm from the bootline. Didnt like the original setting that much,that made the skis feel sluggish. I use the skis as an at setup for spring/steep/early season stuff and dont have anything to complain about the mounting point.

I had mine on the line and absolutely hated them- only ski I could never really connect with. Bought and sold within 10 days.....

If you like the others there- no harm.

But to play devil's advocate with your reasoning above ~ the difference between mounting boot center alpine and boot center tele is that you don't put all of your weight/ pressure in the middle of your boot when you tele-
it is (should be) placed at the BOF where the bellows breaks. That right there is your 3" difference (boot midsole to BOF). If you want another set of eyes on them- let me know and we can set them up at my school (job) before your shift at buck or I can stop by your casa sometime.

I'm gonna ski 'em next time out and see what I think. I gotta quit obsessing about little stuff like this. If they suck, bump them back. No biggie. Just another 8 holes in each ski to drill... I wish I would have had time to get out on them tonight...cut up junk, and lots of racer ruts, with occasional shots of powder. They would've been great! It sure got COLD out there though. I went home and grabbed gear for a 20 deg night, not a 2 deg night with LOTS of wind. I'm still a little chilled...

Went out on them tonight - turn initiation was a little fast, and they were squirrely throughout the turn, especially the front ski. Looks like I'll need to bump them back a little - I'm thinking at least 2 cm.

I was lucky enough to find a local shop that let me bring my skis in and use their jig (for free!). I bought a couple dozen hole plugs, and left them $10 for beer, cuz that's the kind of guy I am.

Anyway, I ended up mounting them at 93.5 cm from the tail, which takes into account midcord + 1.5 cm, and add an extra .5 cm for boots size 27.0 and up. So I'm right at the recommended point. We'll see if that helps the "squirrely" or not. I think it will.

I also figured out that the topsheet graphics were hosed as well! The mid-boot marks were off a tad more than .5 cm!! Bummer about that, but at least everything is right now. You just can't trust the graphic placement on skis anymore.

I put the bindings from the Havocs on to my Frantics though, so I'll have to wait to report back when (and if) UPS ever sees it in their interest to get my new HH's to me. They were picked up on 12/22, and are STILL in Cali... WTF?!?!
