Jackson Hole, Yellowstone TR (w/lots of pics!)
These pictures will pretty much tell the story for themselves, but I'll throw in a little commentary here and there.
My Dad and I went out to Wyoming last week on a tour through Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park. Not only was the scenery great, but the people we were with were great too.
Anyway, my dad and I got into Jackson a day before the tour started so we could have a look around. Naturally, the first place we went to was the ski mountain. We paid for the way over priced tram tickets (18 bucks a ride) and went to the top:

The magnitude of that mountain is just unreal. You see it in pictures but can't really fathom how huge it is until you're standing on top of it looking at the valley floor 4,000 feet below you. I'd be damn scared the first time I ever skied down it. Probably the second and third time too.
Corbet's from the tram:

It was on my list of things to do to make a visit to the TGR studios but I had no idea where the hell they were, and my dad wasn't too keen on spending a bunch of time looking for a place he’s never even heard of. So that plan came to an end pretty quick.
We got back to town, grabbed some dinner, and on high recommendation of the cab driver we went to go check out the rodeo. It was a total hoot. It's like the Nascar of the west. Half tourists and half locals made for a pretty interesting crowd, but everyone had a blast. (by the way, that’s Snow King in the background, its practically right in the town of Jackson. Looks like it would be worth checking out come winter.)

The next morning we met up with our group and spent the morning mountain biking around the Bridger-Teton national forest. Unfortunately I have no pics of that thanks to a dead battery. Later on we drove out of Jackson up north toward Yellowstone National Park. We stopped here for lunch:

I'll be damned if I remember the name of that lake, but it was a pretty amazing place. Notice the total lack of foothills leading up to the Tetons.
Later that day we made it up to Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin and went to check out the geysers - the world’s largest collection of active geysers. We hiked some trail up into the woods for about a mile or two to check out some of the lesser seen geysers, and to get a glimpse of everything from above. We then hiked back down and walked around all the geysers surrounding Old Faithful. It's a total tourist trap there so there were miles of boardwalks that took us around to see everything.
Old Faithful erupting from a distance (it erupts every 80-100 minutes):

The next morning we got up early to hike Avalanche Peak, but due to heavy rains there was a landslide that completely blocked the road to the mountain. We instead had to hike Elephant Back Mountain, which was fairly easy and sort of unimpressive. Luckily it cleared up later that day and we were able to do a few hikes that ran next to Yellowstone Lake. We ended up at a campground where we had dinner.
Views from the campground:

The next day we went on a fairly long hike (9-10 miles) to Artists Point, but not before stopping for a few pictures in Hayden Valley: (all those dots are f’ing huge Bison)
http://biglines.com/photos/blpic26180.jpg
After that we began our hike to Artists Point unbeknownst of the vast canyon that lay ahead. We had some trouble on our hike when we met face to face with a group of Bison who were blocking the trail. We had to take a wide detour around the whole damn herd.
These are not the kind of animals you wanna screw around with:

We eventually reached what is rightfully dubbed "The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.”

At the end of the hike we reached a viewpoint of the Lower Falls. After taking a few pictures we hiked along the rim of the canyon and then down a few hundred stairs (literally) to the base of the waterfall.

Kayaking on Yellowstone Lake:

Once we were back near Jackson we had a day to hike Cascade Canyon which is a 5.5 mile long canyon off of Jenny Lake. It was mostly rolling terrain but 11 miles round trip had my knees craving for some advil. The views made it worth it:

I had no idea "Teton" meant "Tit".
The Grand Tits:

The last day of the trip we went white water rafting on the Snake River, and then we all parted our separate ways. It was great to spend a week with such a good group of people, that really made the difference.

Outstanding pictures. Truly stunning. My favorite was the pic of the lake with the rays of sun comming through the clouds and the canyon. So hard to choose one for my desktop.

That lake is Jackson Lake. The lake is natural, but enhanced via a dam. The area is absolutely amazing. My ancesotrs were some of the first homesteaders in the jackson area. Every time I see pictures of the area, it brightens my day. Thanks.
I have some incredible pictres ofthe area before it was really settled (taken around the early 1900's), including pictures of my grandfather as a kid playing cowboys and indians, with real indian children (don't really know if they were playing cowboys and indians, but they dressed the parts). Oh, and the rodeo pictures remind me of when I was a little kid and did the "mutton busting" competition in that very arena.

Shall we just call you Ansel, dipstik?
I did that trip a bunch of years ago. My sister was in her bikini in the snow in Cody Bowl. That was the first time I ever had any idea that there is still snow during the summer. I did the whole Jenny Lake hike and Rendezvous. It was outstanding.
Awesome trip man. Great pics.Days on snow 06-07: 3

The home office is right next to the Tram Dock. The boys have always been gracious hosts each time I'm up there. Too bad ya missed them.

Sweet. I did that hike a few years ago. Nice pix.
It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia.
