Boston/NY mags DNC/RNC ?
any problems with the convention and transportation and whatnot yet? I'm working earlier hours this week, there were 5 people on my orange line car at 6:15 this morning. They stopped at Haymarket and searched people with bags. Other than that though it feels like the city is empty. I guess alot of people either completely freaked out and went on vacation or are working from home. There is ample parking in Boston which is facked. I saw some wily protesters and there have been annoying people on the T this past weekend asking who I'm going to vote for and would I sign this or wear this button or whatever. Other than that though....smooth sailing so far.
NY folks, you guys planning on doing anything differently when the RNC is in your town? I was talking with a client in Manhattan yesterday who was saying most people in his office are taking that week off. Is the secret service planning on shutting down the area around the convention? Not from nothing, but NY is so huge that it would seem like this type of thing would be no big deal to the average New Yorker.
I figure that like all patriotic Americans, when things are super hectic or super slow, I should probably just go to the bar and throw a few drinks back.
sorry, forgot to add the picture of Charles Nelson Reilly

City seems empty, I was in town on the motorcycle - the conventioneers have no vehicles, and the locals are avoiding downtown like the plague. Never saw such light traffic and few vehicles..

Yeah, commuting has been easy thus far. Much less traffic than any normal weekday.

Ditto to what Dave said - no traffic at all.
Lots of happy people around, joking, smiling, laughing in public and on the trains, which tells me that it must be convetion/delegate folk, and not locals.

Seriously. Don't they know there's a "no smiling 'til Thursday afternoon" blue law?

Now it seems like the only people looking to make eye contact on the T are netgeeks who want a reason to go home and post on craigslist "missed connections". Or they're whacko. Or both.
I like this convention stuff - streets are uncrowded, no drivers around to almost run me over/flip me off and spew obscenities as i jay walk, plenty of cabs available to catch home after a work night binge. Its all good. Kerry 2004.

6' 300# black woman, starts the conversation with me (after interrupting the guy on the cell phone next to me to say 'hi'):
her:why do white peopel wear black in the summer (i was wearing black pants)
me: these were what's clean
her: you know, i don't mean to sound predjudiced, because i'm not, but you know how they say white people have all the money? well my sister in law, she's white, and all she has is a bachelors degree, a cat, and a car! My brother, he's got a masters degree and tons of money and works for the IRS!
me: how 'bout that
her: they're getting married, gonna be a black and white wedding! a BLACK and WHITE wedding, what do you think of THAT!
me (pumping fist): allllright!
gotta love the orange line.

I prefer the obviously drunk strugglers on the T who feel that everyone wants to hear their rants on either being harrassed by cops or the war in Iraq. They don't care that nobody is listening to them, they just want their agenda out on the table.
Actually, my 2 favorite people on the orange line are:
1. the lady with the beautiful voice who sings each stop and which side the doors will open every weekday morning, I love catching that train, she makes the mornings tolerable.
2. the ultra suspect bible dude in downtown crossing most afternoons. He reads from the bible for nobody in particular and if anyone tells him to shut up he runs after them calling them a "stupid ugly jackass of a catholic pagan". that's cool.thats new hampshire as fuck

Anyone else run into the thin black dude with the mustache on the Green Line who always dresses in women's clothing - usually with a white blouse, white slacks and a matching white purse? Weird. Used to see him all the time on the B line.

Favorite T recurring character: DJ Nighttrain.
Favorite T one-time cameo apperance:
I'm standing at MGH one night with a couple lady friends, we're all heading home after boozing at the Red Hat. Homeless veteran approaches, starts talking about how bad his day was, his experiences in 'Nam, etc... We're all being nice, but one of my friends is having problems with her contacts, and is rubbing her eyes alot. The guy asks if hes boring her, she says no, her eyes hurt. He says "Your eyes hurt? What do you think about this?", and proceeds to take out his fake eye and show it to us. Awesome. He lost his conversation friends though - we pulled the slowly-walk-away-without-being-too-obvious-move and jumped in another train car.Last edited by stump832; 07-28-2004 at 09:51 AM.
