Pre Ski Look: 185 Volkl Kuros

Kuros came in today. Thanks to Ptex1 (Tim) and all the other folks at Alpine High who hooked it up and continue to do so, great work.

So they are sweet. The tips are simply massive, you really can't appreciate them until you look at them.

The fit and finish looks awesome. Great looking ski, edges seem sturdy. I'm sure they will suffer from usual volkl chipping on the topsheet, but other than that I can't see any potential issue areas.

The flex. The flex is solidly softer than my 183 soft BROs. Suprisingly, they seem a little softer than the flex of the bridges as well.

The Kuros also seem to be thinner (for lack of a better word) than the bros and the bridges. In other words, from base to top sheet seems to be thinner, this may or may not actually be true, just what it seems to me, this may account for the softer feel but also lighter weight. without bindings they seem uber light, I'm sure the jesters will still keep this as a fairly light setup.

Those are just some initial reactions. I'll update this after the first pow day. Extremely psyched, could not be happier with the purchase. Any more questions or tests you want done, I'll be happy to. Here are some pics. Just before you look. They're shitty, I have a shitty digital camera, my hands shake like a psycho patience. Also photobucket is making me its bitch, won't let me rotate at the moment. Tried to get some of the rocker and others...

Do I detect a lot of anger flowing around this place? Kind of like a pubescent volatility, some angst, a lot of I'm-sixteen-and-angry-at-my-father syndrome?

    fuck that noise.

I really wanted those kuro's but couldn't justify them this year... But once you get them out onto some snow, let us know how they ski

they've supposedly addressed the top sheet chipping issue on the current production run. The sidewalls looks like the same as those on the Katana's. Still waiting on mine, problems with getting a jig wide enough for this massive bad boy....

Sweet.. The pictures don't really justify their size - they really are huge. I'm picking up mine from mounting tomorrow (Jesters on recommended line). Can't wait to fondle them again!

Regarding thickness, they're about the same as my 06/07 Mantras. I'll compare the weight once I've picked up the Kuros tomorrow. Otherwise, I second VPM's thoughts.

Judging by the current conditions in Norway, it looks like we're in for a great winter over here. I'm hoping I get to ski them in worthy conditions before christmas. I'll be happy to contribute with my experiences, hopefully along with some Norway-stoke.

Still waiting for my Kuros to arrive, and still very curious about how much they weigh. Can somebody please put them on a scale and post the results ?

According to a norwegian mag, they weigh in at 2638 grams each, and that's far from light IMHO. Makes me want to trade them for some Lotuses.

Nice work on the burgundy paint job.

I wonder how much skins for those pigs will weigh?

How many people will be touring with these things?!. They can't be one bit effecient.

Oh yeah, and the whole skins thing too.

i have been contemplating the same thing. but i'm still not convinced about how they would go up a steep skin track with a tail like that.

we especially liked the poster over the tapestry.

I always like to see pictures of rocker skis together , from a side view. really lets u see the amount of camber to em.

Is the tail MORE rockered than the tip?

No, they are "continously rockered" so it depends on where the bases meet.

ah makes sense. Looking now you can see how there is hardly any flat section to the ski.

It is a great design the way they matched the continuous "rocker" w/ the sidecut. I think that has a ton of potential vs recurve.

Thanks for posting. It really puts it in perspective next to the Bro 183's. I'm amazed by how much curve they have. It really looks like very little of the ski is flat.

Now if I ever get to use them....

Even one of fellow TGRs who was over yesterday was astonished. The tips cannot be appreciated till you see them. We had a nice long talk about the potential adaptations to skiing style. No more tight knees.

I think the tips are stupid. They are too big, my pontoons used to clatter together too often and these are even worse.

Praxis Pows and 138s are OK for touring, so why not ?

The tips might make me a bit bowlegged, but I wasn't planning any longer tours on them anyway. There are Wailers for that.

Some 130 Alpinist skins would be just fine, methinks.
