Question 183 stiff Bro + Marker Baron = good EC setup?

I know this has been discussed before, but the search function keeps timing out.

Me: 5'10, 175lbs. This will be my first ever non-race ski other than a pair of cheap twins.

I'm no longer racing, and I need a new setup for this winter. I'm not partial to the Bro over anything else, but it seems to be a strong contender as a do-everything ski. I'll take other recommendations...

So my question is, would the stiff Bro 183 + the Marker Baron/Duke be a good East Coast everyday setup? What about the 179 Bro? Is there a difference?

I have zero experience touring, but would like to start. The Baron/Duke seems like the ticket because I want to start earning my turns, but in reality a majority of my skiing will still be in-bounds.

Lastly, I'm going to try and squeeze another season out of my race boots (Tecnica 130's). Will I kill myself trying to tour in a race boot?

    Thanks.

It'll be a dope EC setup. Since you race, you'll appreciate the stiffness of the ski.

skiingsamurai - you'll find they ski amazingly easy for their stiffness.

I think you're going to be in for a world of hurt if you're touring in race boots

short hikes and bootpacks will be fine, but I wouldn't want to spend any significant time in the BC with Alpine boots in general, nevermind race boots

The 183 Bro will do just fine. I really think the 125ish/99ish/110ish footprint is pretty ideal for EC skiing, and with all the skis out there you can pretty much dial in your flex from limp noodle all the way up to 2x4
For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was

I have the Bro 183 Stiff with Marker Dukes. Kick Ass set up! Get some comfy AT boots....You'll enjoy the set up more.

Also last year the center mounting line was like 3mm off? I don't know if that is an issue this year. You may want to ask for mounting advice. Don't let the shop tell you that 3mm won't make a difference blah, blah blah. If they do that go somewhere else.

i'd go w/ the lhasa, but the 183 wouldn't be bad either. touring in race boots is fine. not ideal, obviously, but if saving $700 is important to you you should be able to deal w/ it

They'd be awful, you should probably give them to me just be safe.

This is an ideal setup if you like stiff skis. I'd even be tempted to go shorter (me=roughly same size, no race background).

Shorter, eh? Any particular reason? Because that thought crossed my mind too.

dipstick - don't wait too long.
The 183s will be here from Europe in a couple weeks and they are almost all sold in advance of their arrival.

Don't know about the Duke thing, but I love the 183 stiff on eastern hard stuff. And, of course, you can drag them out west and hit a nice dump with no regrets.

It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia.

I am the same height and weight, and fucken love my 183 stiffs. They may not best the best ice ski, but you can use a race ski for that. They are great in everything else. I don't have Dukes, but have toured on it with Treckers and it was fine. I am thinking about remounting with Barrons when I find some cheap some day.

I was looking at Dukes and Barrons in the shop the other day, and could fine no difference except the size of the spring. There were no changes in the build, no plastic et cetera, that was different between to two, at least that I could find.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

That is a major plus IMO.

hutash: I think I will go with the Barons as I don't really need anything higher than DIN 12 anymore, especially if the construction is the same as the Duke.

    Skibum: thanks for the link

The toe wings and lower heel frame are a composite plastic on the baron as well. I highly doubt these would break though, and if they do, it should be an easy case to warranty.

Just depends on what type of skier you are. Shorter will be more maneuverable in the trees, but less apt for opening it up out west or on bigger pitches. It really all comes down to: do you like to jump around? Or do you like to point and shoot?
