    [cartalk] Vulva 740

I need to buy a used beater car for my momma. A relative is selling her babied 1989 Vulva 740 wagon for cheap ($1500). It's got 170k miles.

Anyone have experience with them? Are these things reliable? Does it cost a lot to fix them when shit breaks? The MSN link above does not have any reliability info, though the carsurvey site has some good reviews.

    Danke!

    Vulva info

The later model 700 series has a pretty solid engine, '88 and up, I think?(check the link above, I'm too lazy)

    Check for rust

    If it's a turbo, does it smoke (a little) a new turbo = $$

Fucked up trim, lights, cracked turn signal lens, brake lens, etc is spendy.

I've owned a few Vulva's, all 'n all, decent rides

Not sure what the market is like where you're at but these can be had for about $1000-1200 here.

    Thumbs up

good ride, but 240 wagon might be even better due to the greater availability of parts in general. tanks for sure, but you should not have to pay over a grand.

If it's got 100+k miles, they question is when, not if for the turbo. Skip them all together.

    Thanks guys.

It's the plain 740 or 740 GL...definitely not the turbo. I'm gonna take it to the AAA auto diagnostic place and have it checked out.

mechanically the 240 and 740 are the same car, just laid out in different fashions. The idea of the 740 was to take the 240 and lay it out into a tighter, more modern package.

My family had a 79 242GT (my first car), an 89 740 Turbo, and a 94 850 Turbo. I now have a 90 245DL. The 740 is still going strong, my little sister drives it down in LA actually. It's held up alright, had a few mechanical issues here and there (nothing serious), but still not bad for a car with over 200,000 miles on it.

My 245 has 165,000 miles. It's doing just fine. I'm going to add a turbo to it when I can.
