Thread: CF cards?

Upgrading my camera package in the near future. Probably D300. What the current standard for compact flash cards. What's the shit, what sucks? Not so concerned with capacity, I don't know if I'd ever go with more than 4gb in one card. Concerned more with speed and reliability.

I've been shooting the Sandisk Extreme III 4gb's and have not been let down yet. Some people swear by cheaper cards but the cost savings is so minute compared to a corrupt card so I don't even bother.

I ve now switched to these as well. Highly recommended.

3rded...quick data transfer to the computer, quick captures on the camera. I got my 4gb card for about $25 on amazon.

SanDisk Extreme III or IV is the way to go.

Hassle free and actually made to work in demanding conditions.

Plus the low Gb cards are pretty cheap these days (with the 32 and 64 Gb cards on the market).

Don't bother with the IV unless your camera is UDMA compliant, otherwise there is no speed increase. Ditto for downloading images from the card to your computer. Your reader must be UDMA savvy to take advantage of the extra speed.

It sure is great how cheap even quality memory cards are now.

I've been using Sandisk Extreme cards since 2003. They fucking rock. Never a problem.

With a D300 and it's "expeed" processor, the in-camera speed of the extreme IV allows for about 70 more continuous fine jpegs at 7frames/second, over the extreme III. The camera's buffer maxxes out at 100 jpeg's, but with the extreme III, the buffer fills up at 30-40 and the camera slows to aprox. 2 fps until the buffer clears. When shooting RAW, the memory card's speed acts as a similar bottle neck, allowing for approximately 14 pictures with x3, and 30 with the x4. For comprehensive action sequences, the x4 is most helpful.
