Ski rack for the bike
A friend of mine wanted me to sell a pair of his skis on here ( will have that up in another day), and I picked up his skis on my bike today. I own an xtra cycle which can pretty much haul just about anything under the sun, but the one thing it hauls poorly is a pair of skis. After riding home with the skis in the saddle bag and hitting my heel on the tails for two miles, I thought that I should build a rack for skis. This winter I am also working for a friend at his ski shop, and wanted to throw my skis on the bike instead of driving. I kind of have an idea of what I would like to do, but other input would be great So I pose a challenge to the maggots to help me come up with something to make this thing a ski hauling son of a bitch. You guys have yet to let me down with wild ass or ingenious ideas. If you come up with and idea that I use, I might just send a sixer your direction.
Here is a photo of what the bike looks like.

This is what I am trying to create

The great thing about the extra cycle is that on the trailer frame there are ports to add accessories on to the bike for things like kayak, other bikes, surf boars, etc. The next two pictures show the ports that are available for me to work with.

Here is the website for xtra cycle if you need extra ideas on what I am looking for www.xtracycle.comLast edited by tenex198; 09-23-2008 at 07:09 PM.

sweet bike. looks to me like you could build a holder that will support the tails (tail-to-binding) and strap it onto the existing bars where the bags are (you could even leave the bags on). Without getting to crazy I would probably grab some PVC pipe (size proportionate to the skiis width) and hack off a section, leave it open on the bottom, fasten some straps or hose clamps onto it with rivets and fix it to the frame. For frame protection use some clear automotive tape (stuff works great to protect against chain slap too!).
If you wanted to get creative you could get some steel/aluminum tubing and get it powder coated instead of using PVC. That would probably require more work than PVC, but would look cool with a nice paint job.
Judging from your tires, you might want to get a set of studded knobbies for pedalling around in the winter in MT. Good luck!!!

I would make it so you carry one ski on each side to evenly distribute the weight if you want to make it in that fashion. I would also check out the attachments they have for carrying kayaks and surfboards on the side as well. Maybe just rig an old pair of pac man style ski racks on there to hold them going off the back

Smiley, that is the general idea that I am aiming towards. Just wanted to see if anyone had a really great idea before I start. Like most projects I will try to do it on the cheap, but it will probably turn into an expensive tab.

might rotate the carrier to 45ish degrees to keep it a little lower profile. i think the other ideas are good though

would it be possible to simply strap the skis onto the pre-existing rear rack, with the tips cantilevered out past the end of the bike? How long is the rack? As long as you've got around half of the ski supported by the rack, I figure you'd be fine.
