Let's get real
Does anybody here honestly think that when McCain's elected he's gonna outlaw abortion? Does anybody really think that Obama's gonna come and take all your guns away? Seriously.

Nope. Sure don't. At least not with out the help of congress and the supreme court. Who the hell would be stupid enough to try and take away other people's loaded guns?
What I really want to know is why people think that this election and these politicians are any different then the TV shows "American Idol" or "Survivor". Bunchabullshit methinks. Obama/McCain are just two marionettes. Why doesn't anybody give a shit about the puppeteer?

No.
No, not all of them. But semi-automatics for hunting or self-protection might be in risk.
But who says the gating issues this time are abortions and guns ? Isn't age and experience ? And isn't Biden irrelevant at this time. Two against one isn't cricket.

your examples are extremes.
duh.
McSame/Failin could make it harder for a young woman to find the means to have an abortion.
Obaden could make it harder for a whack job/jerzilla to find the means to buy an assault rifle.
the fact that i need to explain this to you makes me wonder why you even post these threads up in the first place.... "hey everyone! look at me! I'm incendiary! someone hug me, please""At least if the species has lost it's animal strength, individual members can have the fun of finding it again..."

I know they're extremes and I know they're not big issues for most people at least, but I've heard both (especially the Roe v. Wade thing) here quite a few times. I've heard a few real-life (non-e) people get hysterical about McPalin overturning Roe v. Wade and Barry confiscating all their guns which is ridiculous because, as has been said, that's not a descision the Pres. can make.
It blows my mind that people get so hysterical about either side - and there are a lot of hysterical people here. Hence why I started the thread. I'm wondering how many people just use it as a fear tactic as opposed to how many people honestly believe this crap.
Y'know - Cliff and quite a few others start threads on a regular basis here (about pretty stupid shit, none-the-less) and nobody accuses them of being an attention whore. Why do you think that is? And really - where am I being incindiary? Aside from having a different opinion about some things?
I suppose I don't really give a fuck - it's not like somebody's e-pinion of me is gonna stop me from posting or anything. Anyway - hope that clears things up a bit.

Why they win is as important as who wins, because a McCain/Palin victory will change elections forever.

That's because he's e-scared of me.
^^^^
See, this is what I'm talking about when I say "hysteria". Cliff - you do know that a whole bunch of dingbats think Bush stole the last two elections, don't you?
This kind of stuff has probably been going on since Andrew Jackson. This election cycle is no different than any other.

I think its a good question. Those are no-compromise issues for a lot of voters.
The distinction between Obama on guns and McCain on abortion is really stark though: McCain has made an anti-arbortion stance part of his platform, and if elected, he is guaranteed to choose at least one new Supreme Court justice- which would pretty much guarantee the end of abortion rights as we know it- the right-to-lifers have a blizzard of lawsuits just waiting to be unloaded on the court system as soon as the window opens.
You could also expect more of the policies championed by the Bush admin. from McCain: lots of money for abstinence education and other happy bullshit, more freedom for doctors and hospitals that take fed. money to not provide reproductive care, no support for HPV or other vaccination programs, maximum FDA resistance to Plan B/Morning After pills or effective contraceptives... in short, federal policy predicated on the idea that sex is bad, mmmkay, and should be punished with babies, the Vee Dee, and/or public shaming.
On the other hand, even if he had a blatantly anti-gun platform (he doesn't) and was elected, it seems pretty unlikely that Obama would pursue an agenda that is such a non-starter (repub. supreme court, no majority in congress, lack of broad-based support).
Even the most hardcore one-issue gun-hatin' librul (if there is such a thing) has bigger fish to fry right now--cleaning up the messes of the last 8 years and saving our asses from the next depression are (unfortunately) pretty much the only priority.

I'm pro-abortion, so I'm not trying to argue against it, but..
....overturning Roe v. Wade wouldn't make abortion illegal.
I think a lot of people are confused on that point.

I dunno, If Jer is such a whack job then how does he manage to come out on top of like 99% of these arguments, big or small? You guys say he never actually argues just as he takes your whole post and picks it apart word for word. It is a consistency thing and when you are consistent and all these yahoos coming at you are obviously inconsistent, it is easy to walk circles around all of it.
You get all dizzy and fall down and Jer laughs at you again and the thread ends.
Point for Jer.http://www.carpathianskis.com

He may outlaw evil black rifles and ammunition. Guns without ammunition re expensive clubs.

I'm gonna return the toadying sycophantic flattery and say that Carp just pwn3d Witheredpoon.
Niether Barak nor McPalin is gonna outlaw shit. The Supreme Court does that.
Remember when Cher broke down crying the last election because she honestly thought that Bush was gonna send all the homosexuals to concenrtation camps?

I should find McCain's opinion of Roe vs Wade, and Palin's for the matter.
See, I'd like to know about their stance on the legal matters behind the case, not the deeper philosophical beliefs.
Damn, Jer. You beat me to the punch. What Jer said.
When Jer wants to be inflammatory, he can be damn good at that. When he wants to stick on topic and get to the root of an issue, he can be damn good at that.

DW! I have to admit that I am not as smart as you may think. That was a Galileo quote that I found on the interweb. Here is another one.

Considering that Roe is the only thing stopping most states from immediately banning abortions, I think it's fair to conflate it with the right to get an abortion for a large chunk of the population.
Will McCain try to get rid of the right directly? No. Will he chose one or more Supreme Court Justices who will cast deciding votes on the first case crafted by anti-choice groups that makes it to the supreme court? You bet your ass he will.
Even if it was his agenda, there is nothing Obama could do in terms of gun regs. that would be even a tiny ripple compared to that, or worth pursuing given that (as Splat noted somewhere else) we're losing a trillion-dollar war against a man in a cave and the economy is going off a fucking cliff.Last edited by H-wood; 09-16-2008 at 06:33 PM.
