TR: A beartooth Fishing Derby, Aero Lakes, MT

So three friends and I spent the 5 nights during second week of August in the Absoroka-Beartooth wilderness just outside of Cooke City, MT. Sooo beautiful up in those mountains! We lucked out and saw zero rain over the course of the trip, mostly bluebird every day!
Lower Aero Lake is supposed to be the of the biggest and deepest lakes in the beartooths, it was close to a mile across and over three hundred feet deep! The fishing was insane! Fishing with spinner rods and lures, there was easily over 100 caught between the four of us over the course of four day! Easily the most fish i've caught in one place in my life! Photos taken by the DonkeyLips9 and TheBigEast

wanabe mags gregg and orin, here orin showing up his best point

    Zeus our fearless leader!

    Some pretty flowers

    Good Mouring Lower Aero Lake!

MMMM! Nothing like having two lbs of bacon in the backcountry!

    Damn looks like salmon

    Soo Beautiful FKNA!

Looking back across Lower Aero towards camp, its on the point on the very left portion of the lake.

Oh the possibilities! Zeus and DonkeyLips9 at Upper Aero Lake

Some random dude we say freeclimbing this cliff off in the distance!

Orin telling me he loves me

TheBigEast getting it done on a nasty little traverse! It was about 45 degree slope into some really deep water

What beauties! DonkeyLips9 showing us some of his finer catches

Nothing Like fresh trout cooked over some hot coals

Leroy, our resident mountain goat for the week, looking awefully scary!

TheBigEast with peanut butter in his mouth and orin

DonkeyLips9: "hey guys that sunset is pretty cool, lets climb up and get a better look"

Yep glad we climbed up and took a look!

    "YESSSSS!"

    A closer look

Awesome trip there bigeast. My friends and I wanted to attempt the same trip this weekend, but it looks like the weather will not cooperate. Fishing the beartooth lakes has to be one of my favorite things to do when kayaking and skiing.

This is awesome, helping me plan my coming trip. I need some advice. I was thinking about going up there and hitting the Aero Lakes and then going and hitting up a bunch of other lakes on the other side of Skytop Creek. How hard is it hiking around Lower Aero from Cardiac Hill access with a pack? If it's signifigant boulder hopping I'd rather go up Skytop and hit up between the lakes for a camp. What's camping like up that way? Should I just go up Cardiac or is it decent travel and decent camping up the head by Lone Elk or between the Aero Lakes?

Cardiac hill isn't that hard (steep but short) and if I recall there is a trail through the small boulder field at the top, right before lower aero. I don't remember any boulder hopping, but if there is then it is minimal. There's good camping around lower, you might have to walk around the lake a bit to find it though. I usually make a right at the top of cardiac hill and follow the shore around a few hundred yards and there's some good spots. Even saw some guys float out to the island once and camp on it, they brought waders and inner tubes. Never been up to Skytop, unfortunately. Upper is usually covered in snow early, but this year who knows.

This is my cool song I madeup whilst hiking my 2nd BSA 50 miler in the Beartooths circa 1980. It was good fishing even way back then!
