Holy irrelevant bump to a 5 year old thread. But having Dookey's long ago problem as well, will state for the record that no amount of tape, moleskin, padding, lacing, or ceremonies short of human sacrifice do anything substantive for a bad heel fit. Solution: Find some boots that fit, and if there are none, have a pair made. Or have a good boot repair shop remake your heel cup. Which seems like pricey overkill but is totally worth it a week out into a long trip. In fact, half-ass remedies can be literally dangerous if you get functionally hobbled far from a trailhead or pick up a nice infection. IME, brands to look for that can have narrow heels without killing the forefoot: Zamberlan, some Asolos, the higher end Merritts made in Italy. For me, no go on Sollies or Vasques. Cannot speak to Oboz.

I agree. But I assumed the boots were already purchased/non-returnable, 95% good fit, and custom made or altered was out of the price range for a given user.

Bump — for all those poor souls trying on boots and boots and boots and trying to get a good fit.

Settled on a pair of Hanwags. Fits like a Scarpa with a real leather liner and a bit more width at the front.
Never heard of them before. But very happy to find them!

I have wide forefoot and narrow heels. Had loads of trouble in several brands of boots and never found one that really worked for me - until I tried Meindl. They aren't particularly narrow in the heel, but they use some sort of memory foam in some (not all) of their boots and they did the trick for me. Worth trying if you can find them. (Although Cabelas sell some Meindl boots I don't think any of them have the memory foam).

I have stupid small heels(heals). Two socks, a thin one and a wool one on top took care of blistering.

I have been on La sportiva wildcats but i Recently discovered Keen sandals fit narrow in the heel and wide fore foot so that is onebrand I will be checking

Edit:It may work but i don't think it's ideal to modify a hiking boot like you would a ski boot shell or liner, I think you need to find your shoe.

Having said that the new arcteryx products with an inner liner in a trail runner/ aproach shoe may be different, the shoe I tried on was narrow in the forefoot for me
