Thread: Heaven's Gate

Trio, a channel on my cable system, is showing a lot of Hollywood flops this month. (niche, niche, niche). Of course, they are talking a lot about Heaven's Gate, including a showing of "Final Cut", basically a movie version from the book about the making of the "disaster". Final Cut is fascinating, and they are showing the "uncut" (whatever that means in the digital age) version of the original film.
This is probably one of the most important moments in American movie making, because the whole auteur masterpeice machine that had built up a LOT of momentum ( Raging Bull, Apocalypse Now, Jaws, starting with Easy Rider), was just shut down fast. Important story, and not as bad a film as the critics claimed. Makes you think about what was behind their writings at the time.

It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia.

I watched that documentary last night and it was fascinating. Too bad they weren't able to interview Michael Cimino recently, though. I'd love to see him/her as Michelle..
