Just picked it up and gave a brief listen in the car. Definitely a departure from Hello Nasty, Ill Communications and Check Your Head. Straightforward hip hop(whatever that is, I am no hip hop expert). The beats seem pretty basic, like they were done on a casio keyboard. So far it seems as though TT5B is closer to License to Ill than the later stuff.
It's going to take a few more listens. Probably not the best BBs album. If anything, I can crank the bass in the car and feel a little gangsta on the way to the office.

5-6 listens later the album is growing on me. It's still nothing mind blowing, but a good listen, on a scale of 10, it's a 6.

I can't stand the Beastiality Boys. Overplayed, sell-outs, and their newer stuff is garbage. However, I do dig their instrumental album (can't think of the name off hand). If they don't sing or rap, their music is ok at best.

06-17-2004, 07:29 PM #9I initially wasn't to impressed with the album, a few more listens and I liked it a little more. But after numerous listens it starting to grow on me. Maybe if you listen to crap enough times it starts sounding like good crap. Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars, I don't know about that, but my final take is that it's pretty good.Originally posted by Alex P. Keaton

Well, after a few listens, here's my change for a nickel, minus 3 cents.
Are these guys trying to re-live 1987? I mean, Pauls Boutique revolutionized the art of sampling, now they're seemingly back to drum machines. Very stripped down. Unfortunately, it was the complex layers and sampling that I loved so much on their previous efforts.
Lyrically: Obviously the lyrics have been influenced by 9/11. But while the Beasties have always been politically active off the mic, they just aren't very good at it on the mic. Sorry, you're not Chuck D, or Bruce Springsteen (check out The Rising for the best artistic reaction to 9/11)
Bottom line: 5th out of the six albums they've released
Plakespear's rankings:
1. Paul's Boutique
2. Check Your Head
3. Hello Nasty
4. Ill Communication
5. To The 5 Bouroughs
6. Licensed to Ill"There is a hell of a huge difference between skiing as a sport- or even as a lifestyle- and skiing as an industry"

I totally agree with Plake. The best thing about the previous albums was the production, and that's just not there on this effort. And the political lyricizin' is just painful...There are a few good tracks, to be sure, but overall not worth the nine bucks I paid for it. I would say that I was disappointed, but I wasn't really expecting much.

I really like this new album. lots of influences from other types of production and I really think this album stands out when you compare it to other hip hop out there. it also sounds nothing like their last effort wich is what I like to see. the political spits get a little old, but the last few albums have lacked much real content so it's refreshing.
"And if you don't like it then hey fuck you!" (off the new album

didn't get a good chance to listen to it on the leak (it's down now). however, i read a good quote from them a few weeks back "we're not trying to accomplish anything with this album, we just wanted to make some shit"

I have a few listen throughs in on this album in the last few days. I like it, I tend to like everything they put out though. Music is personal taste. I do think they spit a little too political though on this album, but the message is positive.

Another choice line from that song, though it's a sample:
"So put a quarter in your ass, cause you played yourself"

I think Plake summed it up really well.
The beats are very pedestrian and the lyrics remind me of License to Ill. I thought maybe I was just getting old or sick of their music. But then I listened to Check Your Head and was relieved to find out it's them and not me.
It's the Beastie Boys, so I'll still listen to it, but I'm definitely not that impressed...Glad I'm not the only one.Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
