Is MotionBased the best of it's kind out there?
MotionBased.com. Is it the best there is for posting and sharing saved GPS tracks on actual, real maps? And if yes, why is is so damn slow?
I haven't looked at it since last fall, and everytime I use it I swear I need to find something that doesn't take so long to return each page! Are there any worthwhile alternatives?

Glad to see I am not the only one with the slow problem.

On another note, does motion based support anything other than Garmin receivers? I've got a Magellan and I'm having a hell of a time finding either:
a) good software for my Mac
b) an online alternative that supports Magellan

Afternoon bump. Someone has got to know of alternatives. How about MTBGuru.com?
venom600, it supports files in .gpx format for manual uploads. Although I noticed the file must have timestamps for each track point, or else you get the 'No Activities' message.

I tried something called bones in motion to track a ride once. It wasn't great, and wasn't terrible, either. It tracks your cell phone, so you don't need a separate GPS device.
http://bimactive.com/ba/ui/ba.php. you try it once for a couple of bucks, or by a monthly sub. I only used it once, as I don't have a real need for the maps.

Check out Topofusion.com
I don't think it has the massive trail network like MB, but it is a really useful GPS mapping program.Fuck that! I'm way better than you Edgnar. Once I finish whacking my pole I'm gonna huck this shit hudge cause I'm the best fucking snowboarder on this forum!

Interesting that this thread started 14+ months ago.
Since then I have warmed up to one feature that MotionBased offers: Looking at other peoples tracks in the areas I want to hike or ride. The quantity of context on MB has increased substantially in 14 mos, and looking at where other people 'go' is a cool feature (when a lot of people upload their tracks).

Thread Bump. Some nice alternatives have shown up since this thread was started.
www.mapmyride.com
www.ridewithgps.com
www.gpsbikemaps.com <- some nice looking maps, Blue Marsh Lake (Berks County/Reading, PA).
Garmin Connect (new version of MotionBased) is a slight improvement, but still slow, and still has a cheesy interface.

Reopening a two-year old thread to ask the same questions, and then some:
Garmin connect has replaced motionbased. It's navigation still sucks, really, very very bad. On the plus side it has an enormous number of tracks, and gets uploads from more out of the way places that others (Strava) do. I'm primarily talking about MTB and lesser-so hiking, in areas I frequent.
I know about Strava. Is there anything else out there? I've heard of other MTBers speak of other websites, but never remember the names when I need to.
I'm thinking about a Garmin Edge 500, with a heart rate sensor. Don't have, and no plans to get a smartphone what would work with Strava/Garmin.Connect, etc. Any thoughts?

I've been making the jump from Garmin Connect to Strava, and so far I like it. It is, however, going to kill me. Every day I log in I see buddies that have gone XXX seconds faster than me on certain descents, and knowing this I will blow a corner and get flung into a ditch trying to match or beat their times.
There are still some UI things that are sorely lacking in the Strava interface, though. Navigation is as bad as Garmin Connect IMO, but the social and competition features are currently presently up for the lack of UI. I also am holding on to the hope that Strava is new enough that they are "still working" on refining the interface and features, and eventually it'll be a great platform. I do not know if Strava supports Magellan devices natively (I have a Garmin Edge 305 and an iPhone I use), but so long as you can export a ride as a compatible file you can upload it.
I started with MapMyRide.com WAY back in the day, but ditched it long ago because the interface was SO cluttered. That said, the one thing it does that the others don't is allow you to plot out your rides on their map, so you can plan out a route and then download the file and have it sent to your device. For this purpose I still use MMR.com occasionally.
I have not heard of any others that aren't primarily smart-phone based.ProjectBaja.com :: Donate to our project and help me race the Baja 1000!
The older I get, the faster I was.
