Hudson River - Spring Running
Spring migration around NYC is underway!!
Last summer and fall I made an effort to learn more about the beaches of NYC and this spring I want to get to know the Hudson a bit better. I was out at Piermont pier two weeks ago and even with 45mph gusts it was somewhat crowded.
I Google Earthed the Hudson to find a better spot than the pier and found this area a bit south:

Turns out the path down is clear cut for a gas pipeline.
But, wtf...it could be fun. All packed up:

It was a bit more overgrown than I expected:

Looking down at the Hudson mid-quagmire

Ok...just a little walk through here...how bad can it be?

Oh, that bad...

There were what looked like animal paths around, but they would end abruptly. The key was to just make a beeline away from land and protect your face.
Halfway out there was a creek. It wasn't wide, but jumping across I was worried my rod were going to catch the reeds and I'd fall in backwards.

Once out there it was calm and gorgeous. wish I brought the fly rod, but this was a test to see if fish actually were in this area:

Turns out they were. Only a few small ones like this guy

I was psyched for this excursion because on the best day of the year so far I found a spot that was completely solitary. It took a bit of effort to get there, but I learned a little more about fishing around NYC.

Nice report. Looks like a ton of fun.
Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't
help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...
