    Southland Tales

saw this a few weeks ago at the boulder film festival. Director Richard Kelly, same guy that made Donnie Darko. So, if you liked that movie I'm pretty sure you'll find this one entertaining as well. A lot of well known people in this movie as well. The Rock, Sean William Scott a.k.a. Stifler, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, John Lovitz, and a few more.

Probably wise to have a rum drink, or your hard liquor of choice, close by when watching this movie.

Hard liquor (or hard drugs) will not help.

This movie sucked, sucks, and will continue to suck.

    End of story.

(for those who want a slightly more educated and in-depth version of the above: it was a convuluted piece of shit that tried to tackle too many obvious social/political topics and in the end never managed to fully flesh itself out into a coherent work of art. It was so bad that it makes me wonder if Donnie Darko was really as brilliant as I recall it being almost a decade ago. I'm actually afraid to go back and revisit DD because of ST).

Don't worry, Donnie Darko is still impressive. Just don't watch the director's cut version. That kills it.

7 years is almost a decade ago?

southland tales is already available on my cable box's on demand.

i heard it was horrible a few months back (a friend knows richard kelly and saw a screening), it was disappointing to hear since darko was perfect.

    let's see, 10 years = a decade.
    7 years is 3 years shy of a 10.

wow, after watching this a second time i'd say this movie ain't so hot. I think the first time i watched it I was on a richard kelly kick. plus, i think donnie darko is one of the better movies to come out in the last decade that I wanted to automatically like this movie.

I'd still say that there are a lot more shittier films than this one though.

It was entertaining, but just because it was so awful and random.

It was also funny to see all the washed up actors they threw in there.

I laughed out loud when the guy from the highlander movies came on the screen the first time.

I'm probably in the deep minority here, but thought the movie was excellent. Definitely would like to see the director's cut with the added 20-25 minutes of footage since it ends rather abruptly. Not a detailed opinion or review, but thought it was a lot better than the mostly negative comments surrounding it. Lots of random actors and moments in the film, but the same applied to DD and that eventually gained cult status.
