American Teenage Girls are Disease Riddled Whores
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7290088.stm
STDs rife among US teenage girls
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.
The study, by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found an even higher prevalence of STDs among black girls.
Researchers analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 838 US girls aged 14 to 19.
A virus that causes cervical cancer - HPV - was the most common, followed by chlamydia, trichomoniasis and herpes.
The CDC says the study is the first in its kind to examine the prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls.
It found that nearly half of the African-American girls surveyed had at least one STD, while the rate was 20% among white and Mexican-American teenagers.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, affected 18% of the girls surveyed, chlamydia 4%, trichomoniasis 2.5%, and herpes simplex virus 2%.
Screening recommended
The CDC's Devin Fenton said it was a serious issue because the diseases could lead to infertility and cervical cancer.
"Screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities," he said.
The CDC is recommending annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under 25, and HPV vaccines for girls aged 11 to 12, followed by booster injections.
John Douglas, the CDC's head of STD prevention, says screenings are underused because teenagers often do not think they are at risk.
Analysts say some doctors are also reluctant to discuss screening with teenage patients because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

This is impossible.
According to Dubya, the only true solution is abstinence. I guess he's glad that he pulled all of that funding for sex education. And no condoms in schools; it will only encourage irresponsible behavior.
I guess this is where the practice of no-education/abstinence gets your nation.

Most US adults (as well as adults from a whole slew of countries) have HPV. It is often passed from mother to child. Most of the strains aren't even sexually transmitted.
In most cases, HPV does nothing.
With that said, those are some fucked up statistics.

I read the NYT article on this and I think there are some possible confounding variables. They offered a bunch of girls the opportunity to have a free STD test in exchange for data in a study. How do they account for non-response bias from nonsexually active women, those who are already certain that they are STD to free, and those who just plain do not want the test?

Yeessir, goodd to see that abstinence only stuff is working. Nothing like seeing GWB dumping a shit-ton of money into Faith Based Initiative Programs for the "Just Say No" below the waist program.
Now, this study is rather suspect, for the reasons stated above, and others, but the relgious freakazoids are going to jump all over this to start yammering about the decay of morality and we need more god and 'churchin'. If they start flapping their ignorant myth filled mouths they are going to look like gigantic asses.
Oh yes, I wonder how much Spitzer had to do with all this spreading of STDs."If it had taken any effort I wouldn't have done it at all. I mean it. I wouldn't have done anything" - B. Kelso

Well, that headline wasn't sensationalized at all
Pretty disingenuous to state that STDs are "rife" among teenage girls and 1/4 are infected, and then bury in the article the fact that the vast majority are simply HPV which as Kevo pointed out is basically ubiquitous (and for which many girls are now receiving mandatory vaccinations).
I'm sure the abstinence-only moralists will be quoting the shit of it though.Last edited by Dantheman; 03-11-2008 at 02:07 PM.

That's. The. Point. The study did not differentiate between strains of HPV and lumped them all together as STDs. Also, most cervical cancer is caused by HPV but most HPV does not cause cervical cancer. If it did, most of the women you know would have cervical cancer because most have HPV.

And let's not forget the religious zealots/idiots want to ban the vaccination against HPV for fear it will cause sexual promiscuity among teenage girls.
There's soome good thinking eh? Ban the vaccine that can help make our teens and women healhier because the religious idiots mythology says that sex is bad, mmm'kay, and by removing one disease/barrier (that can cause cervical cancer) it will lead to more fooling around. Or possibly dancing.
The religious zealots/abstinence retards are going to try and expoit the shit out of this "study.""If it had taken any effort I wouldn't have done it at all. I mean it. I wouldn't have done anything" - B. Kelso

ther heroine does heroin
Add that HPV vaccination to the new 'Yaz' pill and we can all live in a chemically adjusted utopia!
Seriously though, how do statisticians live with themselves knowing that every number they produce will totally misconstrued by the first publication that picks them up?

Condoms and dental dams are great.
If you're a relatively moral, ethical person, there's no inherent drive to kiss ass and beg for forgiveness and promise to never do it again, which is what mostly goes on in church. -YetiMan
