    K2 Sahale multiple mount question

    Hey guys,

I have a line on a pair of Sahale's that I'd use for spring skiing and a little ski mountaineering, but they've been mounted 1.5 times. The owner had a pair of dynafit comforts mounted for his 29.0 megarides (which is the same boot that I have currently) and then tried to remount for a 29.0 Zzero which I believe has a slightly different bsl than the megaride. Anyway, at the end of the remount, it appears as though he couldn't mount in the new holes (and I'm not sure aobut the condition of the old holes). He was telling me that I could just epoxy and remount or helicoil the holes to remount.

I would be remounting my own pair of comforts at the same bsl as the original set of holes. I know that it isn't wise continue to unmount and remount bindings in the same holes over and over, but as long as the original holes are in decent shape, would a second remount be alright? Anybody have any thoughts about this?

    Seth

Given that the Comfort has a fore/aft adjustment range of +/- 13mm, something is either wrong with the prior owner's story or I suppose the prior owner's actions.
Anyway though, are the old holes still unplugged? If so, just install the bindings (using some synthetic wood glue first) and if you don't encounter any stripping, you're all set. (If they do strip, then either helicoil, or if it's just one screw, could risk trying just a plastic insert.)
If the holes are plugged, I'll defer to others' judgments.

I'm pretty sure the holes are still unplugged, and I might remember something about stripping in the original holes . . . I'll ask for a little more information. I trust the original owner, so I'll get a little more information. Will most shops helicoil and if so, what's the general cost?

Wood glue? I thought that you were supposed to use epoxy? ;-) Was there every any resolution to that discussion?

If a shop isn't capable of doing helicoils, I wouldn't trust such a shop with anything else.
Prices I've experienced ranged from $0 for several (done while I waited -- but it was a manager I knew) to $10 per helicoil.
The epoxy vs. glue debate goes something like this:
pro-epoxy = added strength, rumors about epoxy ruining foam cores are unfounded, and screws will still be easy to remove just by heading up the screw head a bit
anti-epoxy = added strength is just for the hippies over at ttips worrying about ripping out their bindings, and wood glue is perfectly fine for sealing up the hole against moisture and also providing some lubrication while installing the screws
