So true. Early Wishbone Ash -- the lyrics were fairly lame but the guitar work was sublime.

Got to see Nina Gerber Friday night along with Rich Moore and Mollie O'Brien and Chris Webster.

Nina is one of the best pickers I've ever heard. Used to play in Kate Wolfe's band back in the old fogey days. Rich rips as well. Nina told a story about how Dave Alvin told her playing with Rich makes him nervous, and Dave is no fucking slouch. Mollie is one of the best singers I've ever heard. And Chris is just something special. A great night of picking and singing at a nice small venue.

Bumping this, 'coz so many greats are listed in this thread. After watching the video of Charlie Parr, I surfed over to his website and noticed that he's in Denver on July 8th.

Bryan Sutton. Phenomenal. I saw him with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder at the Alameda county fair in 1998 for the 'Bluegrass Rules' tour. Unreal on all accounts but Bryan Sutton is the best flat picker alive.

I think Dimebag Darrell Abbott of Pantera is pretty amazing
    as well as
Bill Kelliher of Mastodon is very talented.

    But I'm just a Sub-Par guitar player.

Guitar Players Who Don't get Enough Credit

Dave Schramm. Check his band The Schramms as well as what he added to early YLT albums.

Dean Parks is a studio guitarist who has added great texture/color to many albums, one good example is Rickie Lee Jones's Flying Cowboys. His use of tone is slightly similar to Bill Frisell's.

Coco Montoya played some nice licks with John Mayall.

Doug Martsch is no slouch. Nor is his 2d guitarist from BtS, Jim Roth.

Clay Tarver doesn't suck. Check out his work with Chavez.

    Frank Rizzo (Eleventh Dream Day).

Polly Jean Harvey tore it up on her first 2 albums and I saw her rip live.

    Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards)

    Marnie Stern

    Susan Tedeschi

Mark Spencer impressed the shit out of me when I saw Cheri Knight live with him in the band touring after this album.

and finally, Robert Buck of 10k Maniacs was a skilled, understated player who let loose much more often in the era of their album The Wishing Chair.

I'd like to see people's thoughts on who is OVER-rated. Clapton would be 1st or no worse than 2d priority on my list. As would Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani -- speed ain't everything. And I can't believe people think Tom Morello is good. Holy shit.

I'll have to check out Buck from 10000M, always enjoy those albums

    Overrated:

Tom Morello, lol'd at that one
    Kirk Hammett
Robbie Robertson (wait, does anyone think he's good?)

I'll take Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert's playing over Vai or Satiriani

    Underrated:

Lindsey Buckingham, rumors era Fleetwood Mac

Alex Skolnick- His shred work with Testament is some of the finest metal guitar I've heard

    Shuggie Otis

Eric McFadden. No idea how he has flown so far under the radar for so long. Check his bio, check his stuff on youtube. Legend.

Oh, and his longtime bassist, James Whiton, is one of the most underrated in his own right.

Bump. Heard a 16 minute version of Cowgirl in the sand from Fillmore East in 1970 on the way home from the hill today. Neil Young is an underrated guitarist

I've been enjoying Davy Knowles for the last few years. I'd like to see him live when that is an option again.
