    Inbounds avy at KW today?!

Just heard that a slide occured at Kirkwood today in the Palisades. Around 3:15 avalanche sirens blaring, chair 6 shut down, and rumors of possibly 3 people buried (according to a liftie). I hope this isn't true!!

edit: maggots that I know were up there today skimoore, dblatto, davep, and skiergirl are accounted for and safe.

Damn, anyone with any updates? Was up there yesterday getting blown around, hoped to get snowed in, but damn that randomness of caltrans they actually kept westbound 88 open after closing...

Hope it was minor and all are okay... But also hope there were some non-resort witnesses to it so we get the real story...

Avy's are no joke right now in many places.. Winds have been off the hook... Don't forget folks.. Best snowfalls might dump 3" in an hour... High winds, >10" an hour. The snow that fell early with this last event was a lot heavier than the fluff all last week.. Classic upside down cake waiting to rip....

Man - hope all were recovered. Tyrone - did you hear where in Pali it ripped? Those gullies can have some big ones.

I started thinking wearing my beacon powder days at the resort after all these reports of inbound slides. Sunday was the first time I actually strapped it on and turned it on. Gonna try to make a habit of it.

Not sure where exactly. Just heard on my local news here in Sacto that indeed an inbounds slide occurred in the Palisades at Kirkwood. But they quickly followed-up saying that no one was believed to have been caught and there are no reports of missing persons.

will be interesting to see what went, how deep, etc.

    stay safe peoples!

My brother's friends were in the slide on Sunday afternoon in the Palisades.

At 1pm when they turned off chair 6, LHS, me, and 5 others decided we were all going to skin up into the palisades to get at least one more run. Some went back to the car to get their touring equipment and some of us went inside and sat next to the fire to warm up. When it was time to rally, those of us next to the fire decided to do a couple last runs on chair 11 and get out of the wood before cal trans closed 88. So we called the others up and let them know of our change of plans.

The other 3 that went back to the car were the ones that rallied and got caught in the slide. From what I know only one of the 3 were injured in the slide: he suffered broken ribs and punctured lung. Despite all that they say he's doing OK.

They were in the Palisades but I don't know which part.

Holy shit. Glad it wasn't worse.

Lower Oops had slide debris that ran about 20 yards wide and 100 yards down. That put a damper on my first run on Sunday morning. Nothing like straightlining blind into death cookies.

First news I've heard of the latest slides, appreciate the recap and any more info. I need to get my cheap ass out and take a course and buy a beacon.

    happy to hear everyone's safe.

i'm surprised to hear this. they're usually pretty conservative opening palisades.

i'll be interested to hear the slide profile...

hopefully, the news and such are true and all is good at the wood. thanks for keeping this updated.

for the people talking about carrying a beacon, are ya'll doing it to keep your family from worrying for days as probelines continue to look for your body, i.e. the beacon is serving as a body recovery device? i often ski with a beacon on pow or weather days, but literally consider it for body recovery purposes. if i'm really keeping my avi eyes open when resort skiing, i'm making different terrain choices to theoretically save my ass. IMO, thinking that carrying a beacon is going to save your life is just foolin' yourself.

Yes, this season is all too tragic. Too many inbounds slides, too many fatalities, too many close calls. It is just plain crazy out there.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...
