Binding pulled out, where to start?

    So,
my O1's pulled out of my Melee's saturday at Alta. I guess I'm just looking for advice on where to start. I'll try to post pictures tonight. Should I start with the shop, BD or Moment? The shop guy at Alta was pretty inconclusive about what he thought was the problem though he seemed to be leaning towards the ski itself. i don't want to be an ass about this so I want to make sure I do this right. I'm pretty bummed though It also sucks to walk out as they are opening castle and your freinds are heading over there...

    Thanks for the help.

Bindings shouldn't just pull out of skis. It's most likely the skis construction that is to blame. Other possibilities include: the wrong binding screws, pilot holes being drilled the wrong size, under/over-torqued screws, etc..
Bring them back to the shop that sold the skis.

What shop did you talk to? I spoke to the guys at the Motherlode about remounting a Look heel piece that pulled out of my Praxis. They gave me a straight answer (could do it with helicoils and epoxy but no guarantee). After talking with Keith, I went that route and it's held so far (2 days). Not enough to really say if it'll work long term, but at least one guy knew what he was doing in there.

If anyone who works there reads this, I know I still owe you beer. I left it in the fridge the other day and will bring it up tomorrow.

    I like this solution.

Also, make sure you’re not running too much preload on your 01s and you may want to upgrade to the extra-stiff cartridges.

The guy at the shop was awesome and hooked me up with a pair of skis for the rest of the day. He just didn't seem to want to talk bad about anybody which is cool. I'm just not sure about the helicoil thing... Any input on that would be appreciate. Should I try to have my local shop fix it or should I be looking for new skis out of somebody?

Grey area. I would have it heli-coiled and call it a day.

I was afraid of helicoils. They worked super on the heal I pulled out.

This is a really straightforward repair, you shouldn’t be afraid.

This is interesting, as I've heard several other stories of people ripping O1's out. From what I gather in the other tales: 1) certain older garmont models had a short bottom out on the bellows flex causing some dynamic forces, 2) springs bottoming out hard (too much preload/soft spring like Greydon suggests?)

I have a pair of O1's ready to mount, and am wondering if I should build my own Bomber-style plate to spread the force and be able to sink 2 more screws in.

This has happened to me as well (Not with 01's, but Bishop Bombers). As I already had a set of Rottefella holes already in my G3 Tickets, I did not want to move and redrill and turn my skis into swiss cheese.

So, I went to the local race shop (it is MN ) and they head tech suggested that I epoxy in brass inserts (which they put in all the VIST plates they mount.) Why not? Better than redrilling.

After 6 more days on the setup = golden. ALthough, I do recheck the mount every time out, as one screw loosened a little. But so far= so good.

BTW- Your pullout is not an isolated incident with the 01's. I have heard or talked to ~ 1/2 dozen people that have experienced this. Stems from having a fairly small footprint and being a very, very active binding. I am guessing you are using T1/T Race /Energy / XR type boot as well which adds to the equation.

Interesting points made on the O1 situations, Sounds like you should address that possibility also.

Back in my ski tech days I wasn't a big fan of the brass insert that was mentioned above.
There used to be three insert options for blown holes. All three required drilling a bigger hole of course. There was a plastic pound- in insert, which I found unreliable, then the thread- in brass insert, which was ok for wood core skis, but sometimes would pull out of some foam cores and leave a massive hole, and then the helicoil that pretty much worked all the time. I am not up on the latest inserts, but I would bet the helicoil is still the best choice.
The coefficent of desireability is inversly proportionate to the degree of availability.

Several 01's have indeed pulled right out of the ski. I doubt you'd find a warranty from any of the products involved. Helicoil for now, check religiously, and if problems arise, you may try building a thin plate to spread the forces out as bio-smear suggested.
